Android Cherry Popped! Impulse buy = Cherry Mobile Flare S Play

Recently I was in the Philippines and needed an Android device to run Grab car as it's not supported by Windows phone.

I made an impulse buy of the Cherry Flare S Play.

I paid too much (4k pesos with 8gb SD - about $119 AUD). Have since learned the online price is closer to 3k pesos…

The specs are here:

Android OS, v5.1 (Lollipop)
5" HD IPS Capacitive Touchscreen
1.4GHz Octa Core
16GB ROM, 2GB RAM
13MP Rear Camera, 5MP Front Camera
Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/, Bluetooth v4.0
Dual SIM (Standard + Micro)
Li-Ion 2000 mAh battery
Digital TV

The phone actually includes a digital TV receiver. Have not tried it in Australia yet - will in a week or so.

Not having owned an Android device before, I am curious as to whether the phone is any good?

It is dual SIM, octa core, 4G. When I was comparing it against other phones in Manila it seemed good value - it was the cheapest 4G phone I could find in a physical shop - having only recently upgraded my handset to a Nokia 940 for Australia because 2G was being switched off, I figured I'd buy a 4G phone rather than one only supporting 3G…

Anyway I am an Android noob - your thoughts, comments and suggestions would be appreciated. What apps should I use to get the most from Android?

  • Please report back if tv works…

  • For the price point its okay

Cheaper lower end Mediatek Processor and Mali 450 GPU
Lower Res HD only screen not full HD, bit annoying that its only 1980x720 but price point its probably why
Running quite an old version of Android 5.0.1
Not sure if it sports aussie LTE Bands

2gb of ram is quite acceptable for a lower end phone (guess it depends on memory management of their OS if it is customized)

    GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 MHz WCDMA 900/2100 MHz LTE 850/1800/2100/2600 MHz

Not going to be any good for Telstra over here in country areas (needs 850mhz for 3g telstra rural)
LTE 4G should be okay on Telstra but once again may suffer and drop out on telstra due to no 2g now days

For a few dollars more the Redmi Note 3 would have been a good choice but lets factor in you needed a device over there fast

It is alright for Voda / Optus but anything Telstra I would strongly avoid using it due to the fact of no 3G fallback due to no band support

  • The phone comes with an antenna you need to plug in.

I find Android in generally to be pretty clunky compared to Windows or IoS. The app for the TV is shite - it lets you select which country you are in (about 10 options, none of which is Australia) - unfortunately no matter what country you select, it always automatically goes back to the Philippines.

Doing a channel scan with the antenna inserted, I can't find any channels. Maybe if the app actually supported changing countries it could work. But for now at least, no dice on using the TV option in Australia.

    Pity….

    • +1

android experience is better with different companies, and typically higher price brackets will usually give you a less laggy experience. You got yourself a pretty low price bracket phone there. It's still a winner for the money, we don't have a cherry mobile in Aus so our $100 mark androids will typically have lesser specs, alternatively u can buy a grey stocked china brand phone which compete better with a cherry phone [cherry mobiles are apparently imported china phone models with their own cherry OS android experience I guess]. Imo Windows does better than android at lower brackets and iOS doesn't compete at that price unless u buying old phone.

Would've been sweet if that tv feature worked.

    • my guess is the 10 countries in the options share the same digital tv broadcast as the philippines.

which is completely different from australia.
