MSI Vs ASUS for Gaming Laptop

Hai
From personal use, i only have ever tried ASUS (infact, most of my previous laptop are ASUS)
but i heard many good things about MSI
so, judging from people who used both products
what would be a better option to go for an Gaming laptop for under $2,000
With at least 17" and can run games on medium settings without any trouble.

  • Alienware cant go wrong. Know a few people with msi and they wish they didnt

    • Had an Alienware 15 which was awesome. Just upgraded to a Metabox 17" which was much better value but I do miss the quality feel of the Alienware.

Bought a $4000 MSI laptop in September last year… think it has a dud battery. Won't stay on for more than 15mins without being plugged in…just shuts the laptop down…even if it has full charge.
Have to sort out a warranty through Computer Alliance. But its a laptop I use for work and they will take minimum of 1 month to sort it out, hence haven't been able to send it…have shit ton of builds in it and been busy with back to back release dates. Soon… when I can sort out an alternate laptop. Computer Alliance said they won't offer me any replacement laptop till then, short of me buying another laptop. Expected a little better product quality and service after spending over four thousand bucks on the purchase.

    • Computer shops don't want to know you once you spend 4k and then fob you off to the "manufacturer" to resolve

Consumer law is your friend, buy from a reputable shop, always exercise your rights

As a tip, go in and inspect the laptop you like, any shop worth their salt will let you play, test and make sure its suitable for you

I am a big fan of metabox, and gigabyte laptops

Also please note a top of the line gtx 1070 laptop with a real HQ i7 is not really designed to run for 9 hours on a battery, 2-3 at most but the high draw from the cpu and gpu kills the battery pretty quickly unfortunately, I have always found, if you want to run the laptop on AC for a long time, its good to "condition" the battery every couple of weeks to ensure it remains in good condition

      • Yeah might have a check on consumer law, but I think "willing to send the device to manufacturer on my behalf" will cover them. Computer Alliance is a pretty big shop here in SE QLD.
Its the 1070 i7 HQ laptop, and I would have understood if it actually drained battery. This one will just turn off within 10-15 minutes even if battery is showing full charge. Then won't turn on till you plug in charger. And when you do, most of the times it will say, Connected, Not Charging. I first thought something with Windows, and grabbed all logs and tried troubleshooting. Even checked with Win dev forums and everything lead to power failure.

I have heard good things about Metabox/Clevo. I needed a laptop within a day to shift my builds over, so couldn't wait for one of the devices to be built and shipped through. It was the only 1070 laptop on the market then.

        • Fair enough
probably a dud cell or bad charger
          happens more than you think

Could even be a setting in the bios / firmware update needed

Early days clevo stuff was crap, they have upped their game big time recently

        • I see, oh you are also in SE QLD, likewise here
that reminds me never ever to shop from Computer Alliance ever again, not the first time i heard them dealing bad customer service from friends.
i always sticked with umart & MSY.

      • "condition" the battery

Is that even a thing? As far as I know laptop batteries degrade over time as they discharge and are rated for X number of full discharges. The degradation means it can discharge less energy ie. won't last as long for the same activities.

They degrade slowest when the charge is around 50%. They degrade fastest near full capacity or near zero capacity so there is some behavior the user can do to increase life eg. do not run battery down to zero.

So gaming laptops batteries do not last long given that they suck the battery in 2 or 3 hours.

        • Yes it is actually "a thing" and anyone who tells you any different is WRONG completely

There is no memory effect in Li-Ion technology however battery cells that are always connected to AC will not be getting the discharge / recharges that condition and refresh the cells, this is often worse than draining your battery beyond 0% on windows, which usually means the battery conditioning is out of whack, easy enough to fix

Gaming laptops draw a lot of current on the battery and causes the cells to be put under a lot of stress, if you do not charge / discharge batteries correctly then the overall capacity is reduced

Running a battery down to 5% then back to 100% is a good way to ensure it remains fresh

Running below 0% is often bad

People interested should download Batterymon, its free and works well

        • @shawncro 222: OK but this site disagrees with you. It isn't ensuring "freshness" lel it's calibrating the OS to the correct battery level so it provides a proper reading.

Does this laptop have to be new? I have seen many Alienware's on Gumtree going for around $1500 or even less second hand in good condition. You can get a decent second hand that has decent specs. For example I have seen an Alienware 2014 - 5 model that has a 17" FHD 3D screen, 4910MQ, 32GB DDR Ram, 256SSD + 1TB combo, 8GB GTX880M going for around $1500. That will still play the latest games with ease. That machine once was around $4500 new. Well constructed. Negatives, no warranty (unless extended but the seller will factor in the cost i would assume)
Disclaimer: Buying from Gumtree is risky however if you know your stuff, you can get a bargain.
    Cheers

  • hmm, i have actually never heard of Metabox at all.
This is interesting, gonna scout out the website >:o

    • go through kongcomputers kris is a gun he will help you out :) you get a better laptop for the same price as a named brand. metabox are just clevo rebrands (different countries have them sold under different names)

  • I don't know how high end you want to go, but the latest dell Inspiron 15 is quite nice and a good price at the moment on the dell eBay store.

I have the last generation of this model and haven't had any problems with it in the past year.

$1519 after %20 off, plus I think you can use cash rewards.
