Queensland Holiday - Where to Begin?

I'm thinking of planning a short holiday in Qld (approx 5-7nights) in April this year. The downfall is that it has to be during school holidays, and also that Easter is the last weekend of the holidays as well.

Apart from that, we have never been to Qld for a holiday (actually i have been to Brisbane and Sunshine Coast but that was easily 20 years ago, I don't think husband has ever been) so we are not exactly sure what we might be looking for. Not really beachy people as such but a big free form pool would be great. Would we be interested in theme parks? I don't know - don't even know where to start, what part of Qld etc.

We are 2 ppl, early fifties, prefer an apartment style accommodation (I think). I guess we will hire a car and drive around.

What kind of suggestions might the good folk of OzB have?. I know Qld is massive. We are just looking for the kind of holiday ppl have when they say "we are going to Qld". Bargains and secret sweet spots gratefully appreciated!

We are in Melbn btw

  • Sunshine Coast / Gold Coast
Although I would take the Sunshine coast over the drug haven gold coast any day
Nice location and plenty of stuff to do, beautiful beachfront apartments and you have hinterland drives not too far from the Sunshine coast
definately would be my choice again

Bargains and sweet spots won't be shared by queenslanders as some of the good spots are kept that way by being a secret but the beaches north of brisbane are absolutely amazing

  • Drug Haven

Bullshit. I live in Surfers Paradise and go out a few times a week there.

People like you give our place a bad name.

Never once seen anyone taking drugs, been offered drugs or been bothered by anyone on drugs.

Yes, I have seen people under the influence, but no more than any other city in Australia.

    • And yet every tenth person you walk past is tripping off their balls, crazy how stuff works isn't it. They won't be the people bashing other people usually.

Again, total fabrication. More likely had a few beers and a bit noisy and boisterous.

  • Would have to obviously be the Gold Coast :P and do a couple of theme parks, Do the tourist attractions in surfers and go on the aqua duck :P

….step out of entrance door I'd say.

Sunshine Coast over Gold Coast any day….I don't like tourist towns. Make sure you travel up to the hinterland - Mapleton, Maleny etc. Beaches just as good as GC IMHO

Still it's April & I'd want to go north really….Cairns with the Atherton Tablelands as the driving part would be my overall choice.

    Hope you're booking well ahead.

  • Where to Begin?

    at the border

Cairns is not so much of a beachy place but it does have a massive free lagoon. Usually it's chock full of european backpackers though.

Flights will be more expensive to Cairns than Brisbane/Gold Coast/Sunshine Coast.

You might also wanna think about flying to Whitsunday Coast and staying at Airlie Beach, and perhaps with one night on a sailing trip. Airlie Beach also has no decent beach, but a big free lagoon.

Jetstar alone flies direct from MEL to six different airports in QLD.

Cairns is on the doorstep of The Great Barrier Reef take a day tour, see magnificent rain forests, swimming holes like Mosman Gorge, take the gondola over the canopy to Kuranda come back in the train over the huge waterfall, drive past all the beaches and have a cheap feed at the Tin Shed waterfront Port Douglas in 1hour from Cairns, lots of accommodation all price ranges too, great meals at the RSL mains around $15/$20 best beer in town, not much to do there:)

Check out this website for places to visit https://www.racq.com.au/travel/road-trips/150-must-dos-in-qu…

We did 2 trips up north. First we flew to Cairns and then hired a car to take us to Port Douglas and we did tours to the different places to visit like Mossman Gorge, sailing/snorkeling on the reef, Paronella Park, Dainetree Rain forest, Kuranda and white water rafting.

Then since we live just south of Brisbane we drove to sunshine coast and Noosa seeing a ginger factory,an aquarium and the Australia Zoo which is another great place to visit.

Just driving around north of Brisbane is beautiful.

We did not make it inland as I am a coastal lover.

We live close to the Gold Coast which is a very touristy area wtih plenty to do. All the attractions are within driving distance. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Mount Tambourine, Dreamworld, Lamington Nat park and sea-world. Depending on how much you want to spend, if you can afford it http://www.sheratongrandmiragegoldcoast.com/ it is right next to sea-world.
Though not apartment style I do not think.
