Buying a Laptop From Work, Good Deal?

So I'm leaving my workplace, I have the option of buying out my laptop Macbook pro 15" mid 2014, 16gb ram, 256gb ssd, Intel iris graphics only.

They are offering it to me for $1210.

I'm going back to study a full time masters this year so will need a laptop, and might need to do some programming on the side (which this laptop was good for, Unix base for php/postgres servers, etc..)

Anyways is this a good deal?

I think it's a bit high priced for a 2-3 year old laptop, but another laptop for around the same price probably won't have the same specs.

Bargain advice appreciated.

thanks!

  • I'd say it's a good price but double check prices on eBay.

I have the exact same model with a larger SSD and better graphics and from memory they were $3k new as the dollar crashed.
You know the condition of the laptop and if you currently find it fine i'd go with it over a second hand one from someone you don't know how they've used it.

  • Can you negotiate a better price? Some good ""new"" laptops around for $1200 ish…

buy a new laptop and tax deduct it yourself, the company you worked for already tax deducted the one they want to onsell to you, and are now onselling it to you for propably more than its worth. They are trying to have their cake and eat it too.

We cycle our laptops every 3years (4 tops).
For a 2-3 year old laptop the company would have already depreciated it by a fair amount.

I think their offer is way too optimistic.

  • Specs are good, i'd buy it, even if it is a little older if you like mac that is

  • It's still a decent laptop I'm sure. But if you wanted something newer we just saw the Lenovo T460S for $930 on Ozbargain a few weeks ago with a Tightarse coupon. Awesome price for a current laptop. There are deals being posted all the time. So it's a matter of whether you can be bothered to switch over or stick with what you know.

  • Normally I'd steer clear of second hand laptops, but it seems like an ok price. The real question is condition. How long can it hold a charge for? I assume you've been using it plugged in most of the time, if you're going to be dragging it around a uni campus you want something that can last the day.

    • Yeah mostly plugged in, and I've had it since New, I might ask them to discount it further or else just leave it

  • Thanks for replies, I think I might pass on it
Maybe get the cheap Dell for 320 instead
    Smaller lighter and cheaper
