Samsung Galaxy S5 replacement options <$300

Bought an S5 a while ago for $250 with a damaged screen. Apart from the screen having damage at the top it was awesome.

Then the pinery fires in SA happened at the end of 2015, long story short while on deployment the phone copped everything full brunt.

Afterwards I had the cameras on front and back showing up black spots and pretty much becoming useless.

But it still made calls, still got internet, so the ozbargainer / student in me kept saying don't bother replacing it while its still "functioning".

I'd looked into getting the screen repaired when I first got it but found every shop lying to me telling me I needed more work on the phone or lying about what had to be done and it just was not cost effective to have someone repair it, if I had the tools to do it and could buy a new digitizer on it's own before it got damaged more that would have been the way to go.

Now at a point where the top of the phone is missing lol, loudspeaker is now damaged, cameras don't work, the thing gets as hot as an oven using wifi, so i've saved up a bit for an upgrade.

Looking at options under $300 to replace the phone but do not want to downgrade, i've seen a few nice looking phones around this amount but they all seem to be a downgrade?

Anyone able to recommend anything

    Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro

  • I have been using Xiaomi Redmi note 3 pro myself from past few months and have had no issues with it. I bought it for approx $220(aud) from aliexpress. It is SD650 powered phone with 3GB RAM and 32 GB inbuilt memory.

I also received Xiaomi Redmi note 4 yesterday for my wife. She had Samsung Note 4 (6 months old today) and GPS won't work and it freezes randomly. Xiaomi Redmi note 4 has mediatek x20 processor with 3GB Ram and 32GB memory. It has better build than note 3 pro for sure and I like "Double tap to wake" option on note 4. For $220-230 both make great purchase.

    • i've been looking into it and redmi note 3 pro seems ok but from what I can tell it is underpowered / only just matches the s5 in terms of ability?

      • The camera on this will definitely be a downgrade coming from s5

        • arg…. so better of trying to digup an s6 off gumtree cheap?

  • Talked a guy down to 275 on an s6….. that seems like a better deal then anything I can buy new for $300 or under

      • Guy got arrogant as hell and tried to bid me up so I told him to shove it, may have closed negotiation on an s7 for 300 now, will find out friday

  • Is the note 3 pro the best phone for around $300 but theres so many different Xiaomi models how do you know the difference ?

    • I nearly bought the mi5 but no band 28? heard thats a massive neg

  • so update people….. all the phones I could find under $300 new were extremely average.

Nearly pulled the trigger on the mi5, but luckily a mate had one, and while it looked nice….. it seems to have bad reception out in the bush (apparently due to no band 28).

Checked out a zte and a few others, I was lucky none of them panned out.

S7 edge I put in an offer of $300 and the guy said he'd think about it, messaged me back this arvo and accepted the offer.

So now charging up my s7 edge. Thanks all for the advice, but we've got a happy ending from the looks.

    • Nice bid. I'm amazed the you got the S7 edge for less than $500, most completed listings on eBay show $500 as the average market price of a used item.

    • Hopefully no blocked phone sometime soon

      • Smells fishy

        • Did all precautions, forgot to add there is some screen damage, but its an amount I can live with.
