Cheap Source of Acrylic/Perspex for Waterproofing Bathroom?

I'm trying to update the bathroom in an old house as cheaply as possible.

The plaster wall around the shower-over-bath has taken water damage (seems to get hit whenever the shower is used, shower curtain doesn't block it all) and needs replacing and protection against further damage.

My idea was to stick a sheet of acrylic plastic or perspex over the area that gets wet, as a cheap splashback and waterproofing solution. Other areas in the bathroom already have some plastic sheeting that presumably serves the same purpose, so it wouldn't look out of place.

I checked Bunnings and the cheapest piece of splashback acrylic available is $99. The area I need to cover is small, maybe 60cm x 20cm, and I feel that a cheaper solution should exist.

Does anyone know of a cheap source of plastic material that can used for waterproofing? Looks aren't really important - I just want something that works and is cheap.

    • That looks like the best approach if I could be bothered re-doing the whole bathroom.

I was hoping to just stick a piece of plastic over the water-prone area and be done with it.

This is a cheap house in a cheap area, and doing a proper bathroom reno would probably cost more than the value add.

Buy a single 600 x 600 tile and cut it to 200. Just need a tile cutter. A shop would probably do it for you for free. This is your cheapest option.

    • Good idea, didn't think of this. Thanks!

I'm assuming you just "glue" the tile to the wall & don't need grout, since there's just the one? And then run silicon around the edges?

pull off plasterboard, replace it with some cheap cement sheet, paint some water proof membrane on the spot, and put a tile over it

Yeah I would use some villaboard / cement sheet
