14"-15" Uni work/gaming Laptop Max $1500

Hi all,

I'm studying statistics and my 5yo MacBook Air (It's only 1.6ghz and 2GB ram haha) isn't cutting it anymore, so I figured if I'm buying a laptop anyway an OK GPU would be a bonus if possible. I also have a desktop PC with an i5 4690k, 8GB RAM, and a 4GB GTX970 which I use for gaming occasionally.

I only have $1500 to spend, and don't want anything bigger than 15.6". I think 14" would be ideal.

Don't really have any requirements, just the best value for my money.

I would really appreciate any advice/good deals going.

EDIT: Am I fooling myself hoping I might get something with a 4GB GPU at this price? haha

Unless you get a great deal on maybe one of the 20% off Ebay sales 4gig GPU is probably not likely. There are some solid MSI laptops at that price however, they're great bang for buck gaming laptops

If you already have a decent gaming desktop why do you want a gaming laptop?
Remove this want and you will have more options

  • I have an asus zenbook ux303la which has integrated graphics but runs most of the games I have thrown at it. (Don't get that though, it's for a nasty hinge problem down the track).
Not sure how it would deal with open world games

Dell eBay has 20% off at the moment. You could pick up a Dell 15 7000 Inspiron Gaming laptop with a 1050Ti for around $1520.

Actually the specs on that are phenomenal for $1500

Honestly, don't. It's a waste of money, gaming laptops don't game very well, unless you're playing really basic games or get the behemoth 17" ones. Next, if you'll be carrying it to uni, you'll want decent battery life and reasonably light (14" is about ideal for me).

Lastly, if your current macbook air isn't enough, then you aren't paying attention in class. I doubt you have any demanding software you'll have to run, I did engineering, and except for computational fluid dynamics, which required the use of the computing cluster, laptops ran everything else satisfactorily, maybe a bit slower, but it still was acceptable.

Why am I saying this? Getting the piece of paper is no big deal these days. Plenty of other people are qualified. You'll only get out of your education what you take out of it. If you only study to pass exams, you'll be with the herd. If you pay attention in class and actually try to learn something (after all, you are spending tens of thousands for it), you'll be a lot better off for it. Don't give yourself distractions in class. Study with a pen in your hand!

However, if I had to choose, I'd look at gigabyte laptops either the aero 14 or P34 series.

    • I get straight high distinctions. I work very hard.

      • Further to that, I absolutely need a laptop that can run the software I need in my lab classes. My laptop cannot run RStudio, Insightmaker, Lumira, Oracle, SPSS without crashing/freezing.

        • None of that software looks particularly taxing on hardware. If it's crashing, it's probably due to other reasons. I'd suggest a complete wipe and reinstall of your OS.

        • @sd4f: already tried that

Xiaomi Air 13.3 is a definite bargain if you're bothered to reformat it with an English Windows.

Though it has issues with Linux (which there are solution online to fix it)
