Taking Advantage of Overseas Deals/Bargains (for local consumption)?

Has anyone got any overseas deals that they've been able to take advantage locally that they'd be willing to share? I'm not referring to overseas Amazon deals

I'm just curious that's all.

The closest thing I can think of is using points of a foreign airline to get better value out of redemption flight bookings.

Another one I kinda did (which was for overseas consumption though) was hire a WiFi hotspot from Kuala Lumpur to use in Japan. We used Travel Recommends at the time which I believe was the cheapest, but I can see that Wiyo is currently cheapest at RM14 per day (~$4 AUD) for unlimited.

Other things I've thought of:

  • Obtaining overseas credit cards
  • Borrowing money from overseas at a low interest rate and putting it into savings here (arbitrage)
  • Finding a cheap overseas SIM with cheap/free roaming and using it in Australia

Anyone have anything to share, or responses to anything that I've just mentioned? I haven't looked into either of the above in detail but just putting it out there :P

  • Good luck with the overseas credit card… That is next level sh*t if you can pull that off!

Amex has a global transfer program.

You need a proof of address (i.e. a bank account) and phone number overseas.
Once you have a beachhead with Amex in the country of your choice to build your credit record, obtaining further cards is easy.

The difficulty is most credit card deals have a minimum spend requirement. Once you factor that in, FX and cost of maintaining the address and phone number, it becomes less worthwhile.

      • Ah yes I am aware of that global transfer program.

Considering several factors, I think I actually probably will be able to obtain an overseas credit card. Just haven't found a good credit card in that country (Malaysia) yet.

  • I have a UK debit card and bank account from when i was living in the UK on a working holiday visa.
I believe if i apply for a credit card i could get approved.

    • Have you looked into it much? Not really I suppose?

      • Not really. I can use my debit card for that purpose but i think it has barely any money left in it.
