Suit Wear-and-Tear

Since this is my favourite online community I thought I'd ask this question here.
I bought some Moss Bros suits a little while ago.
I notice that it came with an instruction - something along the lines of "your suit needs a break like you do. Do not wear your suit more than two days in a row to give it a chance to rest"
So I was wondering, can someone explain a suit's need to rest to me? Is it to reduce wear, or keep it fresher longer, or something else?
For example - let's say I wear two suits for 500 days each. The first suit I wear from 9am to 6pm every day for 500 days straight.
The second suit I wear from 9am to 6pm every two days, then let it have one day off, then wear it for two days, repeat.
Will the second suit wear less than the first - given they have both had 500 days of wear? If so, why?
I can't get my head around why the second suit would be any better off.
Thanks.

  • The wool in your suit can get stretched and creased when you wear it. Initially the changes will be unnoticable but eventually they will add up. If you give it time to rest it will go back to it's original shape.

If that is true - why does it need a day to recover. Why is overnight insufficient?
How about a 5 on, 2 off routine.
Is there any actual evidence on the optimum wear to rest ratio?

      • Firstly, I like how you question things and don't accept what you are being told.

Secondly, good luck finding the exact answer. I doubt anyone has actually done a proper scientific study on it because I assume you have already googled for it before posting.

If I were to guess I would say any rest time is better than no rest time and I suppose anecdotally and just to make it easy to follow, they just say not two days in a row (assuming people work 9 to 5 in an office job).

FYI - Same goes for shoes…

  • Just remember during daylight savings the suit will fade faster just like the curtains do.

  • Sounds ridiculous.

Consider if you don't take it off at night you could rightfully claim you have only worn it once, even if the duration of that wear was 18 months. Surely they expect their suits to still look like new after a single wear?
    Checkmate suit companies!
