Travel Agent with No AmEx Surchage or Foreign Fees

Does anyone know of a travel agent that does not have a surcharge for AMEX payments and has no foreign fees? I would like to put my travel on my AMEX as my 28 degrees offers no insurance or rewards.

For the flights I am looking at travelgenio is the cheapest. Their site says they accept amex but can't find any info about surcharge or if the transaction will be outside Australia.

Is there a way to tell when a foreign transaction fee will apply?

  • Expedia? No Amex surcharge and Australian transaction.

  • Amex's complimentary travel insurance is one of the worst (if not the worst) you can get. It may be worth considering other options.

  • Why don't you just try and book it? You could have done it in the time it took to write out this post and it would have told you whether it had an Amex surcharge and what currency you'll be charged in.

    • Because my friend I won't know till after I put down over $2000 in money and then % fees on top of that I do not want to pay ok?

      • Is it a direct issue Amex and not a bank co brand one?
If yes and the transaction is in AUD from expedia then you shouldn't be charged anything extra.
Amex's own online travel is a good option if the price is similar. (as mentioned by Cata)

        • I have an direct issue AMEX, but will be getting the Westpac Black with our home loan in a week or so.

So have you used Expedia before with no foreign transaction fees? If so sounds good. Will need hotels as well.

Is there anyway to find out from a site/business where the transaction will be done? This is I believe is what the banks look at when charging an the foreign transaction fee (if not inside Aus)?

  • I recommend taking the booking you've found, and getting it price matched by flight centre.

I just did this today, and not only got $1500 off flight centre's price, but saved the hassle of buying through CheapOair, an online site that if anything went wrong I'd probably be stuffed.
As part of their price match, I paid $0 in Amex fees.

Happy to give you the name of the guy I dealt with, he was a real professional and even after the booking was sealed, he was still making sure I had seat and meal preferences all sorted.
Pretty happy to say the least, never thought I'd do anything but book online ever again but it was a good experience.

    • Excellent thanks, will try that with flight center!

      • Ive got pricecenter to match from the comfort of home.
Obtain a quote today and match it today.

All confirmed via emails and phone calls.

        Not too hard.
        And worked out cheaper.

        • Nice! Assume you mean flight centre?

I did it all online / on phone. Really easy, they have a call back thing so I didn't even have to eat up all my Boost mobile minutes!

Took screenshots of the price I'd found and emailed them while he was on the line. Too easy.
