Telstra Prepaid charging me for data even though Mobile Data is off

I have an android phone (Lollipop 5.1) & an iPhone both with telstra prepaid sim cards. Both phones mobile data is turned off, but I keep getting charged for data usage in 1MB increments, up to 2MB per day. Any ideas on how to stop the data usage completely?

Back before Telstra even got privatised years ago I checked our phone bill. They were adding 1 cent to every bill.

  • you can bar the service on the sim card, as a last resort (if you don't want to use it all)

    • I still want to be able to make phone calls. Is it possible to bar the data usage only?

it won't affect your calling.. go on 24x7 chat and they can do it for you (i'm not associated, i accidentally ticked the box)

On 4G capable phone every time the phone switches from 3G to 4G it consumes a small amount of data irrespective of whether the data setting on the phone is on or off, Telstra then rounds it UP to the nearest MB on simplicity offer, which is what i believe you're on. The smart people on WP found a workaround by locking your phone to 3G/WCDMA only will stop this anomaly, this gives you the freedom to use casual data if/when you need it, if you're sure you won't ever need to use data then get Telstra to bar data from the network level, you can always un-bar by contacting them again

    • Thanks for the info, I am on Simplicity, and I think I will try this first because I haven't contacted Telstra yet.

    • Yep. Always leave mine on 3G only.
