Hi Ozbargainers,

Got a query in regards to purchasing gifts cards from Gumtree. What's the best procedure when purchasing a gift card from Gumtree (private sale)

Thanks, Ivan.

  • while you are with the person, call up the number on the card and check the balance

Is there anything stopping the seller using the code after you have left?

      • Probably not. But I guess you could check the cards PIN is still concealed.

    dont do it?

    step 1. Don't

  • too much risk.

If the cards are not online usable then you are pretty safe. But these hardly anything is not online spendable. (Coles and Myer group cards though, they are pretty safe).

  • would you like to buy some of this amazing snake oil i've got?

ask to meet person at the store of the gift card, use the entire gift card value with the vendor next to you, pay vender the agreed amount after you have received ur items.

if u cant do that, follow the advice of others, Don't!

  • Bloke at work bought some off gumtree. HE rocked up to the sellers place with cash, then checked the cards worked online by purchasing a laptop on the spot and handed over cash to the seller.

I personally wouldn't buy gift cards off anyone I didn't know though. If from a trusted fried, would probably use them first, then pay up.

The Best Procedure is to avoid gumtree.

  • Thanks everyone for sound advice.

I leave it alone unless I can meet the seller at the store and use the gift card to purchase from store straight away before handing cash.

    Thanks, Ivan

    • And to add to this

is the effort really worth it. Spending time going to the store etc

And if its a "popular" card like Coles/Woolies then why are they selling it. As most of these cards are usable. Vs cards from smaller stores which might be more specialised goods.

Any that are worth it will be scams.

  • Meet them in person at the store.
Get the product you want off the shelf.
Have them pay for the product with the gift card.
Give them the cash for the product.

don't think it's worth the trouble. if the deal is too good to be true then it's most likely is :(

  • I guess in regards to effort, it's all about the perceived value. Overall 29% discount of rrp is good, but 40% is better. I don't mind popping into a shop, meet up with gift card seller, and complete the transaction.

I am talking about freedom gift cards. Already ordered what I wanted, but wanted to pay remainder with gift cards. Woolworth currently selling freedom gift cards with 10% off, but noticed there's a gumtree seller selling for 15% off.

  • There could be genuine people selling gift cards they do not need for whatever reason in theory, but finding these people without getting stung by scammers is probably very difficult. Probably not worth the risk.

  • My work has gift cards that get sold at a lot of the big stores.

Even if the gift card you buy from your friendly gumtree seller works on the day, if we get a chargeback or credit card fraud report for the purchase of the original gift card, your purchase will likely be cancelled and you won't have any recourse except against the person you bought the gift card from. That's always a fun conversation to have.

Sure that won't work with all purchases, but if you're using your rewards card in the same transaction you may get a friendly call from one agency or other if the value was high enough. You'll also get flagged as "full payment required - cash only or equivalent" in the POS, and you'll look like a filthy scammer to every staff member who ever deals with you.

That huge discount should be a big red flag but all too often people can't see past the savings.

    • Thanks. That's it, definitely not worth it as you can't protect itself.
