Belkin WeMo Insight Switch $62.90 @ Bunnings

120

The cheapest I've seen the Belkin WeMo Insight Switch. They also have the older Belkin WeMo Switch at the same price. As I just purchased a Google Home this is perfect. Belkin just recently was integrated into natively supporting Google Home.

    • I purchased mine through B&H photo, yes it's imported. Google has not officially launched it here

JBHiFI has them for the same price, but not all stores stock them. you would need to order online and ship to store.

If you know someone with a friends & family you can get it down to $54.43 with instore pickup.

  • this is too expensive, the d-link model is around $50 and they currently have promotion where you can redeem another extra

    • +1

The d-link one is a piece of garbage. I bought one and went through the setup process and it automatically updated itself at the end of the setup process with no way of stopping it, and then wouldn't link to the app so wasn't useable at all. I returned it and swapped for another and the same thing happened with 4 different switches and hours spent researching and trying dozens of different things to get it working before I gave up and got a refund and spent an extra $50 and bought the WeMo for an extra $50 (not on sale) and it works perfectly.

      • Yes it is pain in the ass to get it connected, all unit has that issue and I found the best way to make it work is leave it there and try again the next day. But once it connected it works perfectly fine. All d-link cloud based gadgets seem to have problems with connecting to the WiFi network

    • I bought 2 of them (with another 2 in the mail with the promo hopefully.).

They are pretty useless for integrating with home automation software (I am using openHAB2). There is a node.js script to make them toggle on/off, but I can't get it to report power consumption or heat (of the connected socket).

They connect back to the dlink 'cloud' which can be helpful or not helpful depending on what you are going to use.

The dlink app was pretty awful. I had to enable and use WPS to successfully connect them to my wifi. The update ran smoothly (twice on each unit), so I am lucky in that regard.

Overall I would not recommend, but for $25 each they are an OK play toy.

  • Anyone know if you can use these things without the additional hub?

    • +2

You don't require a hub for any of the WEMO devices other than the Lightbulbs (which incidentally are not supported by Google Home).

You just set up the switch via the app and then link your wemo account to google and viola (ok google turn on bedlamp) and there is light.

      • As long as it works through the phone app I guess that'd be enough - I don't use google's stuff enough to benefit, but the power monitoring and remote activation's what I want :)

    Price beat at Officeworks.

    • +1

Can confirm, as did this a couple of weeks ago. Was $59.37 after their 5% price beat.

The cashier did remark it's funny how they price match against Bunnings, considering they're both owned by Wesfarmers.

  • For those who are iOS users, there's an installable FOSS package that you can install on Windows/Mac/Linux (or a Raspberry Pi if you have one), that will bridge WeMo to HomeKit seamlessly.

It's called Homebridge (https://github.com/nfarina/homebridge), it's pretty well maintained, and very extensible. I've got it working happily to hook in LIFX lights, the WeMo switches, and a Logitech Harmony Elite.

  • Will never buy another Belkin product. Piece of crap. Good luck having to connect each time the app is updated.

    • Never had such problem after numerous app updates. Perhaps something was setup wrong?

      • It's supposed to be an easy setup. But every time they do an update I can't manually override. Have to redo setup. Sent back my first one with same problem.
