Android Pay Terms and Conditions (Bankwest)

I was setting up a card in android pay just now. It is a bankwest card and I was presented with the bankwest android pay terms and conditions. I read through and spent some time reading the security section because of the big disclaimer (paraphrased) 'we will not help you recover money lost through android pay if you don't follow all the security instructions we've given you here'.

So I read them. I saw there are all sorts of restrictions like you can't have ever given your lock code to your spouse or anyone at all ever and other restrictions. The one that stood out and the one I want to ask about was "A cardholder must install and regularly update anti-virus software on the Android Device"

See them for yourself here: http://www.bankwest.com.au/terms-conditions/mobile-payments-…

So, Bankwest Android Pay user, you're pursuing your lost savings because someone accessed your android pay somehow (not necessarily a virus/hack) and nicked all of it. Do you have evidence of your continued use and updating of anti virus on your phone?

I've never considered phone antivirus a thing and I thought that was the consensus. I don't know if anyone I know runs anti-virus on the phone, but who knows about all the other conditions? Is your phone lock code a number associated with you in some obscure way? Did you ever show your wife the pattern to unlock your phone? Well apparently you don't have a leg to stand on no matter what the cause of your money loss was.

Looks like a great list of ways the bank can get out of protecting your transactions, though.

What do people think about it all? Does it seem fair or like a well crafted way for issuing blanket refusals to help when money is stolen?

  • I would be surprised if they enforced it. The only time I think they would was if you admitted blatant negligence on your part.
