How to Get Furniture in a Decent Price?

I went to choose some furniture with my wife yesterday. We were attracted by a set of furniture in Ozdesign, and the sales rep somewhat convinced us that she gave us the best price of $3800 reduced from the original price 7xxx and sales price $4400, and we were told this is a one day offer. I rushed to another ozdesign store and could not get a better price.

Then I went back to the original store, ready to pay for the deposit. During the time my wife was just browsing in other stores in the same mall. She happened to find a store on renovation clearance, after a short talk with the staff, we were offered 10% off on whatever price we get from ozdesign, since they have the same supplier. He even gave me the product list from that supplier Vivin.

I happen to find that at the back of the product list is the price list. And I realised that after the huge discount we were offered, the gross profit is still more than 100%.

I know that every store operates for a profit. But is that too much?

Now I'm trying to see if there is anyway to purchase furniture from Vivin or other importers with a more reasonable price. I don't expect to get a wholesale price as a retail customer but you know as an ozbargainer I have a spirit to get the cheapest price. Any staff from them selling furniture with staff price plus a less greedy mark up?

  • not sure now but few years back, if you are in sydney, around alexandria/mascot/greensquare areas there are few warehouses doing furnitures auctions.
mostly brand new and if you lucky you can get them cheap.

  • Ask the importer directly, or if they won't sell directly to you ask them who sells the furniture you want, then go around and price match.

Furniture retailers pay more than your average business for real estate space and insurance - this is most definitely passed on to the customer through inflated prices.

They also have a pretty unique advantage over online retailers, as delivery for most furniture items is prohibitively expensive.

The wholesaler giving you the 10% discount might just be the best offer you get.

For me personally, I buy 90% of my furniture second hand from op-shops/garage sales/gumtree. Get quality stuff at great prices!2

You would not believe how much you could save until you see the action.

  • Hi mate,

Did you end up getting the furniture you wanted at a better price?

I'm looking at a sofa from Ozdesign at the moment but the sales guy at the store couldn't do anything further than the current marked sales price, which is 50% off the original.

    Thanks
