Accidentally Bought Optus Broadband Sim Instead of Regular Prepaid

Hi,

I accidentally bought some Optus $30 Prepaid sims for tablet/mobile broadband instead of regular sims.

I did not notice this and activated/ported my number to it. I cannot receive/make calls and can't send sms.

Optus live chat was rather unhelpful. Is there a way to fix this / change sim to regular one?

  • Can you buy a new $30 starter pack and port it back?

      1. You cant port from a Optus SIM to another Optus SIM
      2. Porting is for the purpose of keeping a telephone number that you already have, to another telco.
      3. Porting means you forfeit whatever Credits are left in a prepaid SIM.
      4. if OP ports, he loses all value on the $30 sim

the best way is to actually go to the Optus store and request a plan change (also loses all prepaid credit, but this is a more convenient method). Last year I was able to convert a Data only SIM to a normal number SIM (however it's basically the same as recontracting to a new plan, but just keeping the old SIM)

You could try http://www.optus.com.au/shop/support/answer/how-to-view-chan… and see if the links supplied works for you.

Given it's a Broadband sim it's unlikely to be able to have even been able to port a number to it.

Go to an Optus is probably best bet.

Otherwise $30 Optus sims are $10 at Coles this week.

  • Just buy a cheap sim that's of another provider (plenty here on OZB), and port over. If wanted just port back to Optus to the normal sim.

  • Have you considered going in to one of your local Optus stores? I've never left a Telco's shop with my problem unresolved.

It's normally filled with a number of bored-looking millennial employees who will handle your problem for you if you're friendly to them, explain your problem and give them something to do. Much better than wasting time on the phone to somebody who'll just be reading off a script anyway.

Clearly weren't with Vodafone during Vodafail then..
I took my Mum in to a Vodafone store but they couldn't resolve her problem (not receiving SMS) cause the store - inside a Westfield - didn't have Vodafone signal!
      I literally Laughed out Loud!

      • That's pretty abysmal. Most of my problems were account related rather than technical issues. Whenever I had a problem with the physical device (on contract), I found it easier just to send the provider a letter of demand for a repair or replacement under consumer protection legislation. A bit full on, but it always got the job done.

I am unsure if there is a telecommunication version of "spitting in somebody's burger", but if there is, I'd be a prime candidate.

        • Up till then I thought Vodafail was mostly an issue of whiners jumping on Social Media..
After that experience, we went home and I eventually convinced Mum to let me port her number to Vaya.
(At the time when Vaya were the OzBargain darling child, I think she might still be with them!)

  • Hi All,

Thanks for your replies. I went to an Optus store today and explained my situation. They told me that the only way to keep my number is to port out to another provider.
They gave me another $30 phone sim for free. I still had a free Telstra sim and will port out and back.
