Best Nvidia Card around $300?

So my card died and I'm looking for a replacement. I haven't followed pc hardware since the early 2000's so have no idea what's what these days.

My budget is around $300.

What do you guys recommend?

Thanks

  • How old is your system? I mean if you haven't updated your system since the 2000's then you have to update everything considering that the new GPU's doesn't support the older AGP interface.

    • Sorry, my system is 5 or 6 years old and would be replacing a Gainward Geforce GTX 560 Ti Golden Sample. My mobo is ASrock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3, my CPU is Intel Core i5 2500k. Thanks

Go for the GTX 1060, your CPU the 2500k is still a beast when overclocked right, if you're not overclocking it currently look up how to do it so you don't hold back your new GPU.

Will do. I bought it to overclock and never got around to doing it actually!

  • If that's your budget, go AMD, you'll get more bang for your buck.

    1080TI

  • Best Nvidia card around that price would be the GTX 960 but the AMD seems to edge it out a little.

Horrible advice. That card came out over 2 years ago!!

You can get a 1060 for less than $300 today that performs twice as powerful as the 2 year old 960.

Please read/watch some tech news from the last year before giving out advice.

    • DO NOT BUY THE 960!!!!! I sent back 3 - they ended up giving me extra credit for the difference, because they are lemons, so I could just buy a Titan instead.

At that price range you're looking at a 3GB GTX 1060 or a 8GB RX470 from a local store like MSY.

They perform rather similarly, but if you play specific titles it's better to look at game benchmarks from any decent site e.g. GURU3D, Techpowerup.

Alternatively, if you quick you can pickup a 8GB RX480 from Massdrop for about 307 AUD delivered.

    https://www.massdrop.com/buy/sapphire-nitro-radeon-rx-480-8g…

    8GB RX480 == 6GB GTX 1060 > 4GB RX480 == 3GB 1060 ~= 8GB RX470

  • 3GB GTX 1060

If you can get your hands on a GTX 760, it is a great start for a gaming rig - until you can afford something better. Probably get downvoted, but this card will play most games on the market (probably all of them, but have not tested all the games - yet), if you can find it in stock anywhere, it should be cheap.

    • Downvoted because it's terrible advice.

The GTX 1060 is within the OP's budget, it's nearly twice as powerful, it's a far newer design that uses much less power and runs cooler. In short, it's much better value and a far better choice in every single respect.

If the OP didn't have the budget for a 1060, a 960 or equivalent AMD card would be better options than the 760 as well.
