Is It Time to Get Rid of My Mercedes Benz?

Hi just looking for some opinions about my situation.

Currently own a 2002 Mercedes Benz ML 320 with ~150,000km (I assume the car is worth $~7500).
In the past 5 years, the car has been giving me numerous electrical issues. As of right now, the car is at the MB dealer due to a recent complication where it wouldn't start (start error on the dash).

MB thought it was the key and had it replaced for $500 (with labour costing 180/hr). Now it's believed to be the EAM that's faulty and I've been quoted for a $2000 repair. Furthermore, they say there could be more complications apart form the EAM that they cannot detect at this point.

Other complications included:

  • An ongoing leaking sunroof which we taped off (drainage pipe keeps disconnecting even after we reattach it) which previously shorted out the wiring loom, costing $1000 to fix.
  • Power steering leak which was fixed but killed the alternator requiring a replacement (~$800)
  • Front left ABS wheel sensor fault which was replaced(~$350)

What are your opinions in regards to if i should let this car go? I have not yet decided to go through with the $2000 repair.

I should add I've only been driving ~2000km/year for the past 3 years.

TIA!

  • Yes. Any luxury car these days is made to last just long enough for the first owner. They know most buyers lease their cars. So really about 5 years, the length of time of a maximum lease. After that its not their problem or the buyers anymore, as the buyer will be in a new lease car. Merc, BMW and Audi are still only a 3 year warranty period. Stubbornly holding out on the 5 year warranty, unlike the majority of the car industry now.
I have just had a fallout with Merc (the dealership and head office ganged up on me) over a defect in the fake leather seats. I have since sold the car as I was so disgusted with them. However, I am still taking up the issue with head office in Germany. I want the last word and its looking now like I will.

Senseless saying this but 2006 Hyundai Getz - Never a single issue.
Hyundai Excel before that - The same reliability.
Previous Holden Barina 1992 (actual Suzuki Swift) - Never a single issue for 10 years.

However 1996 Subaru Outback - Absolute junk. Nonstop headblower.

I like the stats - Get rid of it = 199 to 3 Repair it.

I hate it how bogans and people with sticks up their arses complain about Korean cars even though they have never driven one.

The Koreans have made reliable cars since the mid-90s. At least a lot more reliable than the crap that the Europeans churn out - but they're never given credit for it. Frankly, I put it down to chauvinism. Japanese cars went through the same thing. It took thirty years for people to acknowledge that Japanese cars were of better quality than American vehicles.
