[MSY] Out Of Warranty - SSD Failure

Hey OzBargainers,

Just looking for some advice, i'm quite confused as to how Australian Consumer Law is. From my previous understanding I thought electrical goods were only under warranty for 12 months and after that there's nothing I can do.

However, I have an SSD that has failed on me spontaneously at under 2 years which in my eyes is pretty bad seeing as SSDs have a general extension on warranties for about 5 years or so and are rated to last for 5 years and above.

Is there anything I can do? I have purchased this from MSY and i've just quickly googled warranty and MSY but it comes up with a lot of articles on MSY getting fined. Please help me here if possible, and thank you in advance!

  • Have you contacted MSY about it?

If they still won't cooperate then call the Consumer Affairs or similar department for your state and explain the situation. Depending on whether they deem your claim to be "reasonable" they will coerce MSY into replacing or refunding.

I have yet to call Consumer Affairs and have them tell me that what I'm asking is "unreasonable".

The following Kingston products are covered by this warranty for a period of three years from the date of purchase by the original end user customer: DataTraveler 2000, HyperX SSD (FURY, Savage, and Predator) SSDNow® (Solid State Drives), except for the SSDNow® DC400, SSDNow® KC100, SSDNow® KC400, SSDNow® S200/30GB, SSDNow® SMS200/30GB, SSDNow® UV300, SSDNow® UV400, SSDNow® DCP1000 and SSDNow® M.2 G.2 (SM2280SEG2) Series SSDs.

    Call their tech support:

And enquire about what you can do.

Personally I'd prefer to arrange the RMA myself, rather than have MSY send it off for me. That way you know exactly how it's been handled, packaged, and can make sure the address details etc are correct.

    • Yeah, manufacturer's warranty.
Almost all products come with this and they say how many years it is on the packaging.

The basic consumer law is if they sell you the product DOA or described incorrectly you can return it for a refund or exchange regardless of store policy.
