Xiaomi Smart Home stuff

Has anyone had much of a play with the smart home stuff?

I was wondering about setting up scenes with their sensors, lights etc.
e.g. can I have a motion sensor in the bathroom & it changes the colour of the gateway light (or a Yeelight colour) when someone is in there?

Or on the garage door, can I have a sensor to detect if it's up/down, locked and that changes a light colour (save me checking manually or even the phone).

  • Sure, you can get a motion detecting cloud webcam in your bathroom, just enable motion detection in the cloud web UI. I'm not sure if they collect any data, but it makes life easy so who cares.

      Not sure if sarcastic or…

Good idea I can turn that into a pay-per-view site. Ir even a foxtel channel.

  • Who the hell puts a web cam in the bathroom. That is some sort of perverted big brother show…

OP asked for a sensor that will be able to trigger a light that lets him know that the bathroom is engaged. Not a webcam.

  • Hi OP, I saw this done on youtube with a xiaomi door sensor and the light on the hub instead of a yeelight. It should be possible.

    • cool thanks. do you remember the link to the YT vid?

Zapals now has all the kit & sensors on sale. SO I thought bugger it, I'll just buy some & see how it goes.

      • Can't find it anymore sorry. He was only showing how he was using it not how he set it up so it wouldn't have been too useful. I also purchased a kit from zapals and am waiting on it now.

  • Depends on your bathroom. I've set mine up with one sensor inside the bathroom and one outside. The moment you step in after sunset, the bathroom light goes on. The moment you step out of the bathroom, the light goes off. The on works flawlessly, the off needs a well refined position or someone walking past may set it off. If you get that wrong, it might not turn off every time you go in etc.

The biggest downside is that unless you have a chock block full battery, the motion sensors only work every minute instead of every second. However, yes you can definitely do it as I have it working pretty well now.

All you need to do is have a red light on outside ($25 for a colour yeelight that you can re-purpose). $35 for a gateway, you only need one so not worth buying any more.

  • Anyone know of a way to use Xiaomi gateway to get an aircon switching on/off? The wifi plugs don't work as they will switch on but the aircon is still off etc. Aqara and innolinks appear to control aircons but only ones that work on 16A and not 10A.

    • Yeah, you'll have to buy a Xiaomi Universal Wifi IR Remote. You can control your air conditioner if the universal IR remote is within 20m of it and has a direct line of sight. That and your air-conditioner has to be popular enough to be in the app so it can't be a super niche one that you bought from Aldi. You can manually program any IR command except for air-conditioners, apparently they are complex and have multiple IR signals going at the same time.

I use the smart plug in combination with the IR remote to automatically turn a fan on and off. Off is easy, plug goes off. On is easy as the plug goes on, 3 seconds later, the IR remote sends the on signal.

I also use the IR remote to automatically change to HDMI on my TV and I use it to control the volume, channels etc.
