iPhone 6 Rear Camera Lens Replacement Advice Melbourne

I bought a used iPhone 6 and noticed that the rear camera lens was broken.

I did a spot check and noticed the going rate for having this fixed in the Melbourne CBD is $75.

1) Does anyone know of any place in the Melbourne region that will do it for less? It appears to be just the lens that is broken, not the whole camera.

2) Can anyone recommend a place that will do it reliably?

Thank you.

  • $75 seems a little steep for just replacing the cracked lens glass. What you could do is buy the replacement piece, go to a phone fixing store, and ask whether they can replace the part for you. Just a word of warning though - the camera itself is just a component latched down via a couple of screws, and connected via a ribbon to the mainboard. What you don't want happening is getting the job 'fixed' at some dodgy place where they totally replace the camera with a cheap one (the fake camera component is only $5 from eBay), and take out your real iPhone 6 camera component which is a lot more valuable.

I've played around with fixing up an old iPhone 5s before. If it's anything like the iPhone 6, then the lens piece itself is very cheap and replacing it seems fairly straightforward. From looking at the ifixit instructions, I've done that before and it's not too difficult if you give yourself an hour or two, and buy a proper $2 Phillips 000/pentalobe screwdriver from Jaycar rather than using the cheapo tools. Although from reading the iFixit comments, might be better to get a trained repair shop to do it.

As for a recommended place - I live in Perth, so can't really help (shoutout to Mazmiah though did a great job on my S5 screen), but what you can do is search Google/Facebook/Gumtree for 'iPhone repairs.' Normally they will list 'iPhone 5/6/7 LCD replacement' but they won't list 'replace cracked iPhone 6 lens glass.' What you'll have to do is find a store with many recommendations, and then go instore (or message them), and ask the repair man whether they can just replace the cracked glass piece, and get a quote. Hope that helps.
