Laptop for Uni - Budget $2k?

Need a laptop ASAP, was wondering I could get some suggestions. Budget maxes out at 2k.

Want something that has decent battery life, pretty much my only requirement. Throw suggestions at me boiz.

Was considering the '16 MacBook Pro but unsure if it's worth the price tag considering what else I can get .

so, what are you studying?, do you have a preferred screen size?. is weight going to be an issue? what do you need a laptop for- i.e. word processing? programming? photo editing/design?

  • Studying computer science so raw computing power I don't think will be too much of an issue compared to courses where the use of CAD and photoshop is prominent.

Wanting atleast 13 inches or more. I'm a size queen.

Weight isn't that big of an issue, lighter the better but I don't really care.

Word processing, programming, Netflix, Facebook and general browsing.

Would be formatting this properly and quoting but I am on my phone so sorry for my laziness.

  • X1 Carbon or Yoga.

    • Why choose those two? I'm not questioning just curious as to why you jumped to those two.

      • Because they fit your budget, have been on sale recently, are very lightweight and portable, business grade machines with great build quality, very good keyboard and in the case of Yoga it can be used in tablet mode as well with the pen which is handy for taking notes at uni.Fits all your usage requirements too. Most important thing for uni is lightweight + durable.. these are your machines if you want that.

        • Unfortunately I think I may have missed those deals as they seem to have expired.

        • @Ehx: dell outlet update their sales list regularly so check each day.

Depends how long you can live without it.

The best value for a high quality laptop is without question a latitude E7470 or equivalent Thinkpad/Probook, the E7480 has just come out but seems to have a few drawbacks (non-removable battery). The difference is the ease of getting latitudes from the dell outlet versus other machines.

But it really depends on how long you're willing to sit on the dell outlet site refreshing. I picked up a "refurbished with minor signs of wear" E7470/i5-6300/16GB RAM/256GB SSD/1080p screen for $1100 in May last year, it was physically brand new but had a computer name clearly from its previous enterprise life (it was probably set up and then never used so returned). Took about a week to get to me.

Your specs dont inform the need for crazy processing power (i.e. proper quad core cpus, which make the laptops have much worse battery life or larger).

Macs are nice but costly. Other retail grade recommendations are ok but despite what others say I don't really buy the rhetoric about build quality. Use notebookcheck to inform yourself on quality of laptops.

Get a Dell Latitude 14 7000 (E7470) from the dell outlet.

You need great battery life and a 14" screen. :)
