Matching Energy Discounts between Providers

AGL is offering $100 credit when switching both electricity and gas accounts to them, plus 21% off electricity usage and 15% off gas usage.

Instead of switching, is it likely that the current provider would match it?

AGL is the bane of my existence. Avoid them at all costs. I am about to switch from them to Origin/Energy Australia

They do not care if there is a problem. THey will rake all the money they can from you before they decide to help you. SO UNHELPFUL!!!!
I wish Ausgrid was an energy provider. I prefer their service.

  • Also for Queenslanders take note that if you change your provider from Ergon you cannot change it back at a later date. At least that was the rules a couple of years back.

And for everyone else, beware of fake AGL invoices in your inbox, even just clicking the contained link (without opening any attachments) can give you a dose of cryptolocker.

Don't be fooled by X% of this and x% off that. Most of these companies market these discounts but you'll generally find that their standing charges and consumption prices are high, and the discount brings the price into the reasonable bracket but not necessarily the cheapest.

You need to do a proper comparison of all offerings to find the best deal.

In Victoria you can use the state government comparison site

    https://compare.switchon.vic.gov.au/welcome

Not sure if other states do anything similar.

Also, before signing up, check when your proposed retailer last raised prices. If others have raised prices recently but your choice hasn't you might find that soon after you join there is a price rise which no longer makes it the best deal.

    • Don't be fooled by X% of this and x% off that.

The whole system is just bizarre - it's setup so you can't meaningfully compare the market (save for using a website like that). I don't know how there hasn't been action to prevent the practice entirely.

I am with AGL. Using this site, most of the compared estimates are more expensive than what i am paying. Even the AGL estimates are $30-50 more expensive per bill. So i cant really tell if this is a good comparable site even if it is government based.

  • Im with AGL in Sydney, I used the govt comparison site and AGL still wins. And you can phone them for a larger discount as well.
