Can anyone tell what is causing this issue?

Hi everyone! I own a Ford Fiesta mk7 and have just started experiencing issues with cold starts.

Here is a video of the problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUbIMftbK0U

As you can tell, the engine starts then immediately cuts out. After that the engine struggles to keep idle revs and the air conditioner affects it greatly. Even with the air con off it'll take the car about a minute to stabilise before I can reverse down my driveway.

I bring my issue here as I know a lot of you are brilliant, and being an Ozbargainer I'm trying to save money on mechanic fees.

Thank you.

  • Vacuum leak maybe?

    • How would I go about checking that?

    • +1

Vacuum leak probably won't go away as it warms up. Throttle body would be my first suspect.

      • The throttle body has been cleaned and the problem still persists.

        • Is it throwing any errors on an OBD scan? - The next thing I would check is some of the sensors -
          Oxygen etc.

        • Strangely no errors have shown up. I'll have a look at the oxygen sensor, the car does have 160000kms on it.

  • When I owned a really old car and I lived overseas I had the exact same symptoms. Turned out my fuel filter was all clogged up with muck.

I can't say the same here because fuel here is supposedly of a much higher grade. Also, if the vehicle has had regular servicing, then that filter should have been replaced on time anyway.

    Just throwing it out there.

    • On our last service, that's actually the one thing we ended up not buying as SupercheapAuto had to specially order it in without the discount. I'll get on that as well. Thanks.

      • Good luck.

As an aside, the muck we found in the fuel filter after we managed to cut it open looked a lot like malformed pearly greyish tapioca balls.

I don't know enough about fuel or engines to know if this is the normal muck associated with fuel.

    • Did the car also have any issues revving smoothly?
