Hello ,

I am planning 4 days trip to Tasmania and need some advice . I will be travelling with one of my friend. it will be our first road trip and i don't know exactly where to go . will arrive at Hobart and i m planning to rent a car . My current plan is to go around Hobart city and Near by places such as port Arthur . From there i will be going to the Binalong bay and spending the one night . I am planning to spend nearby places such as Ansons Bay and Cape portland on next day. The last 2 days will be staying at Coles bay and freychinet national park . Please do give me suggestion of popular places and where to go .

Also i still can't decide what to rent for the car . I m thinking of hiring toyota camry or corolla . Would it be cheaper to hire Hybrid Camry to save the fuel ? Please do advice . Thanks 🙂

Bruny Island is a must - Get Shucked and Bruny Island Hotel were the best meals we had in Tassie.

Bruny is good but not sure you can fit it into your schedule. If you go to the hotel for dinner make sure you book a table prior.

If you manage to fit Bruny Island into your schedule, make sure the car hire company lets you take the vehicle over there.

      • I think they generally do - you lrt them know and they get you to sign a waiver =)

Day 1- hire car, go to MONA, mount Wellington (if you like beautiful views), walk around the city and waterfront, check out Salamanca.
Day 2 - Port Arthur. You really need a day to check it out properly, it's an hour and a bit each way from Hobart driving. Do the touristy things on the way such as Tesselated Pavement.
Day 3/4 - East Coast. I went there recently and it was great. Check out the beaches, do some walks at frecinyt. We stayed at a great b n b in Swansea called Schouten House - highly recommend. Dinner options aren't great in Swansea though.

Fuel is expensive in Tassie, so definitely get something that is economical. Also note we have a lot of dirt roads, in fact most of the good places are along dirt roads.

I would advise to get the ferry to Mona, part of the experience, think it's $22 return or $55 if you get the 'posh pit', which upgrades you to free drinks and canapes.

Get a car with a bit of guts - we hired a Corolla, only to be told when we arrived that it had a flat tyre, and all they had left was a Yaris.

Driving an automatic Yaris through the hilly windy roads of Tas was not a fun experience.

Try not to stray too far, we made the mistake of traveling too far each day and didn't get to experience most of the towns we went to due to lack of time.

Have breakfast at the Machine Laundry Cafe in Hobart.

Check out MONA, it's interesting and you'll either come out loving it or hating it. But that's what it's all about.
Drive up to the top of Mt Wellington. Great views, just don't forget to bring something warm, it can get very windy there.
On your drive down to Bruny Island there's some great cheese factories and cider places.
Near Freycinet, there's an Oyster store on the side of the road. Grab some fresh seafood at competitive prices

  • Unless you actively like going to art galleries don't go to MONA. You will waste half a precious day.

  • thanks a lot for all the reply and advice . As I am on tight schedule i dont think i will be able to go to Burny island and port arthur as my friend prefer to see bay more than historic places. I am going on middle of March.
My current plan is to drive all the way up to east coast of tasmania and see most of the bays. First day i will be spending most of the the time on hobart and will go to bay of fires to sleep over there.

As for the car i m looking to hire Toyota Camry Hybrid to save the fuel from avis with full add on insurance or do i really need a full insurance ?the default excess cost are 4500$. Or should i just rent Normal Camry or corolla

    Thanks again
