Are They Deals or Are We Becoming OZ-Catalogue?

Looking at all the people complain/argue in the AMD Ryzen 1700X deals, It begs the question - are these deals or not?

Well when it's interesting new tech - I would argue it's news/can be a deal if compared to current generation tech.

I had no idea this CPU was coming out. This just shows you that if you spending $500 on a CPU this could be a better deal than what's currently in market.
A better example 5 months ago:

If I posted a GTX 960 Nvidia card deal for $200. And someone posts a 'standard price' gtx 1050 deal for $150. I would be so thankful because now I've saved $50 and got the same performance.

Now(5 months later) if a gtx 1050 gets posted for $150, because it is an established product in the market- I wouldn't call it a deal.

My point is - the timing of the product can make it a deal or not.

Same thing happened with the GTX1080s, yet they would all front page.

Now people post NES Mini deals and a minority complain.

If it front pages then in theory the majority like it, if it doesn't then they don't, simples!

You pose an interesting question Tech and Cars.
In relation to your tittle (Are They Deals or Are We Becoming OZ-Catalogue?), personally I think the question is Are They Deals or Are We Becoming OZ-Mothersgroup?
Such a platform can be used as a punching bag for the bored looking to troll.
As such I do not think the rules of the group are the issue, the issue is the members within the group.

It's a fact, OzBargain has died.

This has just become a place of mediocre-sales with a majority of deals being regular 'sales' or 20% of some store.

If you think OzBargain has died, how about contributing by posting some deals? You haven't posted anything yet.

Plus you've only voted up 1 deal in your time here. How is anyone to know that you liked their deal if you don't vote? Or have you only liked 1 deal over the last 13 months?

So then don't complain about those that actually do put in the work

didn't you get the memo about the re-brand to OzRRP?

My view "Well when it's interesting new tech - I would argue it's news" and can be posted to the forum (needs another poll point ie "Posting new technology is not a deal but they can be posted to forums."

Valid new technology can set a new pricing benchmark for an item, all prior price points then become history and as such cannot be used to decide "bargain" any longer.

For example just look at HD & SSD prices, always trending down over time as technology improves storage capacity inside the same shell.

Anyone selling a NES Mini for $99????

But the new tech deals just point toward the lowest price or places with availability for limited release stuff.
So useful to people seeking those products, hence why they get up votes.

If you want better deals, go ahead and post them.
As an aside, I remember Scotty or Neal saying that February is traditionally the slowest month after the festive season.

  • Starting to get the same vibe with all the icon pack deals from Google Play, or some random unknown android games.
People used to upload deals about items and software they personally vouch for, nowadays it seems to be about upvotes.

  • Personally I think the folowing are diluting the value ('quality' if you wish) of OzBargain's deal feed:

+ low quality deals from the same set of store reps trying to peddle either:
-garbage aliexpress items (at very high markup)
-trinkets destined for to be worn once then off to the bin
-old stuff eg shoes two generations old, offering free shipping at $50 but pricing the shoes at $49.99 .. yeah gtfo

The above seems to get through because people don't have time to do the research to neg vote, or the same store reps just keeps posting similar deals after a couple of weeks or months.

ps: i'm aware the Moderation team is always updating the guidelines to minimise the above, which is appreciated.
