Navara Diesel Dilemma

Vehicles. They drive me mad. I have a 2008 d22 Navara which my father had from new and I bought off him for $14000 4 years ago. It's been a good vehicle, it's never left me stranded. I did have some issues a couple of years ago when the head was blocked with soot from the egr combined with oil mist. This was when I first learnt about modern diesels and the downsides of them.

Recently, I have noticed my ute spews smoke under load - white smoke which signifies unburnt diesel. The injectors were identified as an issue when I had the head cleaned that time. The injectors for my ute from Nissan cost approx $650 each… Baileys diesel has reconditioned injectors, but they cost over $400 each. If I keep driving it around, I'll get fined by the transport mob eventually.

Should I bite the bullet and change over the injectors? The nephew is a diesel mechanic, so the labour will be discounted. If I want to use the ute longer, I'd invest in an oil catch can to catch the oil mist and a secondary fuel filter with a water separator.

The other options I have considered are:

Buy a new ute. A duel cab Triton 4wd for 3k (30k for a 2016 plate). Seems like the best value in the segment at the moment.bi would put on a catch can and a seckndary filter straight away, as to hopefully ensure longetivity.

I'm worried about what kind of trade-in I could get though. I don't want to be dishonest and hide the injector issues. A 2 minute test drive will expose that anyway. I am sure dealers will punish me for the injector issues and tell me my vehicle is worth next to nothing.

Or

Get a pre-common rail ute. I have no idea what ute to get - but surely there are some varietals that are particularly trustworthy and reliable. My concern with this is older vehicles have hundreds of thousands of kilometres on them and could have reliability issues.

Any advice out there?

Sorry - 140000ks on the Navara - single cab.

Can your nephew remove injectors and take to injector shop and have tested, then replace only the faulty one?

    • Can they do that? Looking at forums i didn't think individual testing was an option.

      • Yes, each tested and or sold separately.

how many kms on your d22? Under 250,000km then fix it up and keep.

You could also blank off the egr valve to stop it fouling the inside of the plenum etc. Not sure about the D22 but i know it can be done on other diesels. Or you could solder a resister into the temp sensor on the air intake - i know this is whats triton owners do to fool the ecu into thinking the temps are cold so the egr stays closed.

The new Triton deal is hard to beat.

    • Yeah mate, I blocked the egr off after I had the head cleaned out. Didn't mention as eco warriors flip over that stuff. 140000 ks.

      • 140k thats only just run in and you know the history from new Fix and keep for sure.

  • I'd say fix it, but knowing how much improved the more modern style Utes are over a D22 might be worth upgrading, but not to a new one. I bought a D40 because it fitted the budget and provided plenty of room on the inside compared to the D22 and similar age twin cabs.

    • Yeah, true. I wouldn't mind the sixth gear the triton has - always trying to shift up on fifth in the nav as the revs are just a little too high. I do like how utilitarian the nav is though.

  • Leave the Cab's alone, they have enough of a hard time with Uber. 10 paces at dawn is so old school anyway.

  • Why don't you just ask your nephew?

    • He only believes in driving land cruisers.

  • "If I keep driving it around, I'll get fined by the transport mob eventually." What???? Your 1st concern is YOUR wallet? What about the poor sucker following - suddenly blinded, others breathing in your smoke or even damage to the environment?

Nephew should do whole job for free plus parts at cost. Remove, test, clean/overhaul as required. Family should look after family. Or buy a manual/book, it is not that difficult if you are handy with a bit of gear and tools. I have never in over 30 years charged family or best mates labour, bar maybe parts even below cost just to get rid of old stock.

What ever you end up doing & you have some good info here for your decision making assistance, just do it soon. Good luck.

  • White smoke can also be caused by failed glow plugs - that's where I would look.

    • Glow Plugs are only for start up. OP's issues are on acceleration under load.
