Hiring a tradesmen!!

Hi guys i am in negotiation with a tradesmen to come and do a bit of work on my site. I have been provided with a quote which clearly states "we are fully insured". But just to be sure i asked the guy for his certificate of currency which is the insurance details but he refused saying you don't need it. Do i have the right to ask this guy for the paperwork or no. Am i being too hesitant. I mean is does say on the quote he's insured but what if he's not.

  • Yes, he should definitely supply a copy of his insurance for you if you ask to see it. Ask to see his license as well. I'm a tradesman and am happy to supply these to my customers before commencing any projects. If you know his name then you can check out his license status here - http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/

(I'm assuming you are in NSW if not then use google for your state's fair trading website)

  • He is licenced i know that. I have checked.

  • If he is this unhelpful at this stage do you really want to proceed any further with this guy?

If he not insured and has an accident on your property you could be up for a bill.

  • Would it make a difference if its stated in the contract though.

  • just drop him and move on - seems a bit dodgy

  • I will be dropping him. I have sent him an email. Thanks guys

  • I would fall over in shock if a tradesman provided a copy of his current insurance with his quote!
They are quoting for the job so they must want it so why not slip in one more piece of paper?

  • Because if he damages anything on your property then you'd know his details and whom to contact with your case. He obviously isn't confident that this scenario won't arise.
