Best Hot Water System Technology?

I have a broken electric HWS at home.. need to replace it within the next few days (can use family shower for time being).

I have natural gas available, but only use a gas cooktop so i dont know if it's worth keeping gas at all? ($0.59c per day access fee before usage).

The options are basically:

  1. Change over to GAS instant hws ($2000-2500 due to extra gas pipes needing to be run). Continue to pay the $0.59c daily access fee for HWS and cooktop only, oven is electric.

  2. Disconnect gas, switch over to:
    a. Electric HWS ($1000-$1500 roughly)
    b. Heat pump system ($900-$1500 installed - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/294170)

I have a 1.5kW solar system installed at the moment, and will be installing an additional 5.5kW system in the coming month.

Will it be worth keeping gas or just do away with it?

do allow for extra elec load on circuitry for new cooktop

  • What about solar hot water system? (the kind that use the suns heat energy directly to heat water)

    • The cost seems too restrictive for just "hot water"… and plus i will have around 25-26 panels on the roof before even considering the panels from the solar hws.

  • I'd get a rinnai 26 instant or higher and a natural gas BBQ and room heater.
Plenty would argue with this, just my opinion

  • heat pump for sure

In 5-10 years time solar will be massive as battery power will be affordable for the masses. I would disconnect the gas in preparation for increasing your panels and getting battery in the coming years.

  • A second hand system buys you some time to make a decision

  • @joshuah, i know this post is nearly 2yo. I am thinking the same as my place only the HWS is using gas, thinking to change it to a electric one so I can cut out gas cost totally. It would save about $100pa on gas account fees. Just wondering if you changed over in the end? ALso, what's a heat pump system? Is it also electric but with solar panels? Thanks.
