Is West Ryde a Safe Family Suburb?

Hello guys,

I'm planning to move to West Ryde,NSW suburb with my family, somewhere close to Ermington Public school (Sindel street, Cheers st. etc)
Just wanted to know how safe the area is, especially at night.
Are there regular bus services? I could see many bus stops with frequent bus interval timings listed there, but was wondering if they actually follow the same. My wife uses public transport to office and sometimes return back late .So I would like to know if this is a safe place for families.

Please share your thoughts.Thank you all!

I used to live there, and yes, it's a fairly safe area to live in. There is not much nightlife there, but Coles and Woolies is there for convenience.

The M52 bus route on Victoria rd is a very frequent service that travels to Parramatta <=> City

Publicly available data indicates West Ride is quite insignificant in terms of the usual crimes (assault, robbery, sexual offences). But you're very close to the Ermington border which has a higher rate of those crimes, and it increases as you get closer to Parramatta. That's not to say Ermington isn't safe though. It could just be that there was a house party one night that got out of hand and then you had 15 people arrested and charged with 45 offences causing an unusual spike in crime in that area. It's hard to say.

-you could live there your whole life and see nothing. This is the nature of very low crime rate areas. Or you could live there a week and your car gets stolen.
-The data available is inconsistent and shows exact locations of some offences, whereas others are just recorded by postcode.

Overall its a pretty safe area if you're just looking at official crime stats. I wouldn't hesitate to live there. Pickup a copy of the local newspaper they have and see what residents are complaining about. The crimes you're concerned with like assault are worst in the CBD and along the strathfield-Parramatta train stations, and Bankstown lines also. And then you look at robbery and many of them happen between the M4 and M5 area. Above the M4 there's a crazy contrast where it's kind of void of anything significant. So West Ryde is in that nice clean area.

Used to live there a couple years ago around 2011. It was good. Very low crime. Good neighbourhood small restaurants, cafe, and pubs.

The minus is that trains don't go that often on weekends, you might want to get a car.

The apartment prices was very reasonable.

I've heard Remington had a bit of a bogan and crime issue. But that was 10 or more years ago. West Ryde seemed very nice.

    • Remington

      ?

      • It's the new suburb between Ermington and Flemington. :) Autocorrect did it to me too.

The side that borders ermo is a bit more dodgy than the sides bordering Ryde council suburbs

  • Thank you all. Good info!

  • I worked in the area for a few years and have never seen anything shady. Other than a crappy pub I visited once that had a horrible seedy vibe…. but there's one of those just about everywhere

Considering the same area to live in as well as the local public primary school, West Ryde Public School seems to be well regarded.

Been doing some research and seems a quite nice and convenient suburb to live. Some pubs, restaurants, cafes, coles and woolies. Served by buses and trains. Geographically, 30 mins to city, parra and chatswood so in the middle of big employment hubs.
I noticed though especially in the morning near the station, some people that hang around there look like people that may live in housing commission. Purely from their appearance though so i may be mistsken.
Maybe someone here can confirm if there is any housing commission in the area?

Need to research further but overall it is one of suburbs on top of my list

    • There is indeed housing commission in West Ryde near the Top Ryde side of things, and in older parts of Meadowbank as well.

      • Thanks for the info niggard.
Do you live in the area?
I was suspecting that the housing commission somewhere near the station as few of them seem to be around there in the morning, but glad to know it is not the case.

        • I live in a house up the road in Eastwood, about 200m past Ryde hospital which puts me within a 700m walk to Eastwood station. To my knowledge all the housing commission properties in this area are pretty well established and aren't that close to the train station. I did the Census in the Eastwood area, so I've seen where the good and bad parts are. Some new housos complex was built in Eastwood near the Midway shops which actually looks better than the paid properties around it, but I can't say the same for the residents. Many of them were actual scum and I got asked if I was the police many a time and got told to f off because I was working for the guvmint. Thankfully there are no housing commission properties within a 1km radius around me.

If you're going to buy/rent near Ermington, make sure you install security systems and bars on your windows - don't take any chances. I've heard from friends and I've seen firsthand how feral some of the poorer Ermo residents can be. It's also too damn close to Silverwater, which is too damn close to Auburn, which means the rate of undesirable people in the area rises exponentially.

          @niggard:

Good to know the housos are not near the station. Cheers for the info

  • If you are looking to buy in NSW, you need to take a look at some statistic first. You can find everything you need at https://www.lifull.com.au/new_south_wales/ and search for what you need. Doing a full research is a must when you are buying a house. Family homes require a lot of necessities, so you need to research everything that your family need.
