Wireless Router ($200 budget) Recommendation from cable modem/router.

Been with Optus for a few years, and been reasonably happy with the crappy CG3000 modem/router we were given. Up until recently that is.

Since netflix has come out, the wireless no longer stretches to my room when there are 1-2 people streaming at the same time despite us having download speed of around 70-90mbps.

I'm sitting on a budget of around $150 but can stretch to $200 if it gets me significant improvement.

Appreciate the help!

Buy Asus RT-AC68U or Netgear R7000 Nighthawk wireless router. They're hardware identical with their own software/case.

The Asus looks slightly less hideous than the Netgear and Netgear have had a few major security flaws (as in knew and did nothing about it) in the past year so I would recommend the Asus.

Then put the existing modem/router into bridged mode (google it for the model if you need to but basically it's just disable NAT and disable wireless) and then connect an ethernet cable from any ethernet port on the modem to the "internet" WAN port of the new router and plug your devices like computer into the new router.

    • I'm trying to keep it under $200. Is there anything slightly cheaper with similar specs?

Theres the TPLink D7 (or D9?) can't recall, that's TPLinks competition for these two i think.

Don't forget to watch for used or refurb on eBay.

        • The D9 is their modem/router combo, I think you're referring to the C9. I can get it on the ebay deal for $180, so i'm probably gonna pull the trigger.

What do you think of the EA9200 AC3200? It's also linked for $205 (with code), and looks too good to be true.

          Thanks for the help!

          @l3wis992:

I was definitely looking at some of the Linksys router, seem to have very good reviews.

But I managed to pick up a bargain C9, alomost new for $100, and I love the amazing thing. Did a bit of a test on range, we have a 19Mb/s ADSL2+ internet connection, and I can get full speed on the 2.4ghz WiFi band at 35m, including punching through 4 internal walls, external brick wall, and completely through a 6x9 colourbond shed, and thats with our land having a downwards slope, so at 35m I'd probably be 4m lower than the modem. So yeah, that's pretty good.

On the 5ghz band, I can get the full 20Mb/s speed at about 28m, through the house and brick wall, but not through the shed. And thats about 2m below the router.

        • @AdosHouse: That sounds perfect, thanks for the comment. Im just holding out until I can figure out why the EA9200 is so cheap for its comparable specs.

  • Linksys EA9200

  • Hi OP, wondering if you ended up with the TP Link D9, if so how's the performance? Cheers

C9, and it's been pretty good so far. Im being bottlenecked right now with my crappy usb wifi receiver, but I hit about 70% of top speed after busting through several walls.

If its on sale, grab it for sure.
