Toyota Recall Letter Regarding Airbags etc

I received a letter last year in November in the mailbox regarding a Toyota recall for Corolla models from around the year 2008 onwards. It says that airbags lining or something needs to be fixed, I didn't understand it and thought it was just a junk mail 'spam' in the mailbox. Now in Jan 2017 received a similar letter and telling me to make a booking for car to be recalled fix. My question: Is this just a way for Toyota trying to make a buck or too or is something seriously not right with airbags?

I would have thought any repairs for a recalled car would be free - so can't see how Toyota would be making a buck - more they would be losing money on each car they fix.

A recall is a free fix for a serious manufacturing defect.
It is important you take it to get fixed, and it will cost nothing.

You don't have to pay anything to get it fixed. it is free. they will not make a buck off you, it will cost them a buck.

THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE AIRBAGS

  • yes this is a serious defect, there's a chance that if the airbags were to deploy, sharp metal objects may explode seriously injuring the driver and or passenger. Very important that you get that fixed

  • Recalls are fixed for free. The letter would have been very clear about that if you read it properly.

    Also…

It says that airbags lining or something needs to be fixed, I didn't understand it and thought it was just a junk mail 'spam' in the mailbox.

Best to have called one of the contact numbers that would have been on the letter if you didn't understand it.

Just a bit more reading for you…

Official recall information regarding Toyota Corollas - This should be the correct recall notice for your Corolla, and below is the main issue that they are talking about.

The Passenger’s front sie airbag inflator propellant wafers may have an increased potential for moisture intrusion over time. Moisture intrusion could potentially make the inflator assembly more susceptible to rupture during airbag deployment.

Wiki article on Takata Corp (Airbag manufacturer) and the whole defective airbag issue. Read the references if you still don't believe it.

TLDR: No one is trying to rip you off. If anything Toyota are trying to help you. Your currently defective airbag has the potential to seriously injure you or your passengers.

    GO GET YOUR AIRBAG REPLACED.

  • my honda civic only got recalled for the airbag replacement recently as well
it takes forever for them to fix all the recalls

How anyone could skim read a recall notice and disregard it is beyond me…

How did you not read that a) it's very important, and b) it's at no charge to you?!

  • Its real. Get it fixed asap. No one wants shrapnel if an air bag deploys

Absolutely not, they're something automotive manufacturers are required to do if and when a major defect is identified with a vehicle component. The affected component(s) must be repaired or replaced at the cost of the manufacturer. Recalls don't do good things for a manufacturer's reputation so they'll contact the affected owners as quietly as possible and generally only issue one where there is a very real liklihood of damage or injury.

The dealer may attempt to convince you to buy additional products and services while your vehicle is in their workshop but you're under no obligation to do so, if you book in just to have the recall fixed then the cost to you will be $0.

Maybe check to see if your Corolla is affected by the Master Power Window switch recall as well and get them both done at the same time? https://www.productsafety.gov.au/recall/toyota-power-window-…

  • Agree with the posts above, HOWEVER, my experience with my local Toyota dealer in terms of recalls has been poor. I received the letter. My wife called up to take it in, they coerced her to get the car serviced at the same time. That, I have no problem with. However, when she gave in the car, they did the service at a cost of $900, but did not fix the recall issue saying they did not have the parts.

Fast forward 3 months, and I got a call to book the car in for another "service" - a 'major service' because the car has just turned 10 years old,, where they will also fix the recall. When I asked for just a fix of the recall, they then went on to turn down all the convenient timeslots. The only time they will do it is between 1pm and 3pm, a time when I am at work. When I mentioned I was considering the service, they suddenly had an 8am slot open up while I was on the phone.

    Crooks!

  • Nah, it's a scam. Ignore the letter. (Then crash and as the airbag explodes and drives fragments into your skull conventiently remove your stupidity from the gene pool)

Seriously, this recall was all over the media as one of the biggest recalls by any manufacturer and it really should have been done long before now.

  • actually got another 'recall letter' from TOYOTA and its telling me about another 'job' that needs to be done for the car. something seems really strange here? why are there different letters telling me to get 2 different jobs done? is there something fishy about this?

    • Just. Wow. Please sell the car and buy a bicycle, seriously. (facepalm)

Some vehicles can have more than one recall (eg. earlier ZZE122R Corollas had one for passenger airbag and one for power window switches). Ring your local Toyota dealer, advise them of your rego/VIN and they will explain to you if there are any OUTSTANDING recalls to be completed and book your vehicle to get them done.
