Best Way to Replant a Cutting

Hi OzB

My grandmother has a fantastic nectarine tree that produces amazing fruit. I want to take a cutting from it but am confused on all the different methods.

What's the best way to take a cutting and plant for it to successfully take root? Just cut a lengthy branch and plant in a pot? Use rooting hormone? Take a seed from an actual fruit and plant?

Also, when's the ideal time/season to do this?

    Fruit trees can be grafted. The branches then produce the most similar fruit.

    • So if I don't graft then the fruit will not be the same as the original?

        No the seeds won't give the same fruit. If it is grafted.
        I'd try the powder in some seed raising mix in a pot with a stake.

        • Rooting hormone powder?

          @neo-X:
          Yeah, I'd even go to nursery with cutting to buy powder, and ask the nursery staff, if you go to a genuine nursery you'll often find some old guy/lady who is an expert in this sort of thing.

    buy Yates "Take root" keep your cuttings under 20 cm, trim off all leaves to prevent dehydration, keep the pot in the shade, soil moist for 4-5 weeks before replanting

    • Could I leave it in the pot after that 4-5 weeks or do I have to replant in the ground?

        A fruit tree would thrive better planted in the ground it also needs sun light, a nectarine tree isn't that small to be kept in a pot
