Mechanical keyboard under $100?

Can anyone suggest a mechanical keyboard with red switches for a price under $100?

Open to suggestions about different types of switches but so far i've seen red seem to be the most popular for gaming. I have been using student discounted equipment from the local library so I dont mind much for how good it looks, cheaper the better.

  • I use Aorus K7 Thunder which is blue backlit mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX Red keys.

The K7's claim to fame is a detachable numberpad which they call a "macropad" because you can program up to 100 macros into it so you can use it as a TKL or a regular keyboard (with the number pad attached on either side). The macropad can also be used independently plugged into a USB port.

Unfortunately the connection between the macropad and keyboard is prone to breaking with movement making the macropad impractical to use unless it's attached via USB. This is a major flaw but only if you want to attach the macropad to the keyboard. The macropad cord is also unbraided which clashes with the braided keyboard cord.

Other than that there is a lot to like: the keyboard feels heavy and solid, it has mouse wheels to adjust key brightness and volume levels and the cable is very chunky and braided. I noticed am immediate improvement in typing accuracy compared to the membrane keyboard I was using before.

You can also buy the K7 keyboard without the macropad which is sold as the K3. K7 is often $95 at MSY, K3 can be had for as low as $65.

  • aliexpress has some

  • Something that mimics the Cherry Red is pretty easy to come by. You can use some cheaper variants and get a mech board for around $50-$70. Ali express and even Massdrop sometimes have cheap mech keyboards.

People say the red is better because it has no tactile feedback and is smooth all the way down to bottoming out. Whether or not it's a real thing is debatable since it's mostly personal preference.

  • This has gotten good reviews in the past:

    • I guess I can go for an option like that where they are trying to replicate the mx cherry switches but the AORUS K3/K7 for abit more cost would give me true mx cherry switches
