Has Anyone Else Been The Victim of an Oscar Award Winning Mistake?

So I couldn't help but watch the cringeworthy mistake at the Oscar Awards today. It made me think of the time that I was offered a promotion at work…A boss from another level came down and took me aside. He went on and on about how I was the right man for the job etc.. and said that they would like to give me a promotion involving more hours and more money. 20 Minutes later he came back down and told me it was a case of mistaken identity and that he intended the offer for someone else!

Has anyone else been the victim of an Oscar award winning mistake?

  • I ran in a fun run. Men, women and children all ran together. I won the prize for the female children section. I was then announced as second or third runner up for overall women. I went up, collected my trophy and prize. Then there was a bit of noise as it was announced I did not in fact deserve the second prize and it was snatched back from me with no explanation until later on.
Despite what this implies, I am not a great runner. I had asked my mum if I could enter so she signed me up and paid the fee. On the day of the race it was pouring down rain. Mum and dad insisted I run anyway as they had already paid the fee and sticking to what you start etc etc. not many people ran hence why I got a prize at all.

By the way, this was totally staged. I didn't see the show but had a quick glance on the news.

If it wasn't for this, would anyone be even talking about the Oscars. You probably can't even name another winner of the ceremony.

Cheap ratings grab reminiscent of the worst reality shows on TV today, to try and lift its sagging ratings..

Why would they want Oscar coverage of a mistake rather than the winners and runner ups like they normally get? That sounds silly. The news normally covers the Oscars.

      • I wouldn't have known about the winning movie had the 'blunder' not been shown on the TV news. Headline news it was too.

I actually looked it up on IMDB.com and now want to see it. Hadn't heard of this movie before.

        to Diji1

A rule of PR/publicity/marketing is "any news is good news"

I just quickly went on both the major news sites in NSW (smh, news.com.au)
Both had this story (on a few articles) on the top of the page.
If not for this stunt, Oscar stories would be in the entertainment sections only about 3/4 of the way through the page.

Similar things I am sure are happening around US news sites / US TV shows etc etc

Like I said, their ratings are falling so they need to try ways to keep these award ceremonies in the spotlight

Feels like a spec savers ad

  • Trolling for publicity

  • Actually one for my side. This girl I knew back in the final year in highschool was usually on a lower part then me (I was team sports captain, she was vice, we were both vice school captain, I was the school fire warden, she was like the vice warden sort of thing).

Anyway at the end of the year they were giving out the big school awards as they usually do, one was a defense award that came with $500 (pretty substantial to us).

And she ended up winning it, her name was called and in front of all the school parents and students she walked up and grabbed the award. At that moment the principle turns to me and says something along the lines of "oh crap, that was supposed to go to you". I was kind of like wut? Anyway at the end of the award ceremony the principle walks up to the poor girl, tells her it went to the wrong person and takes the award off her.

She comes to me shakes my hand and gives me the award (it had my name on it as well).

It wasn't in front of everyone like the award ceremony thing was thankfully but I still sorta cringe every time I see this person lol.
