Reliable FTTB NBN in Sydney

Hi Ozbargainers,

I have been using Belong NBN 25/5 since last April. I live in an apartment so it is FTTB.
While I am pretty happy with the speed I am getting, ~23 Mbps/~4 Mbps, I am not happy with the reliability of the connection.
Since last April, there has been at least 3 occurrences where the internet connection did not work (outage).
Pretty poor considering previously I was with TPG albeit ADSL2+ for years and never had any issues with connections (not that I can remember anyway).

My contract is up in April so thinking to switch to another provider.
What would be a great reliable and fast FTTB NBN provider in Sydney area?

I am thinking to go back to TPG NBN (shame that their own FTTB is not available in my apartment).
Any suggestions are welcome.

  • Apparently MyRepublic aren't too bad once you get connected and Skymesh is good but pricey.

  • I know they are expensive - but I genuinely have never had any issues with my Telstra NBN connection (almost a year now). It is consistently fast and I have never had any down time. Which is a surprise considering their recent form.

I do pay $99 p/m with a 1000gb quota, but I have 100/40 and, frankly, I never get even close to the quota.

    • How close do you get?

      • I just ran a speed test whilst connected to my VPN (Sydney Server)

      • Maybe you meant how close to my quota… Ermmm generally around the 600gb mark, depends on how many Linux distros I end up pulling from my server in the Netherlands.

        • +1

I love my server in the netherlands. I usually pull at least 300 gig a month worth of linux distros each month

        • When you guys say Linux distros you mean like.. the walking dead kinda Linux distros? ;p

        • @AlienC:

That 'Walking Dead' you speak of doesn't look like a half bad distro!

@Xiongmao: haha touchè I knew this somewhere somehow existed. TIL

OK guys I am bit green here.. were you guys talking about seedbox in Netherlands?

    • This is interesting comment. From my knowledge, Belong NBN uses Telstra infrastructure but you never have outages while I experienced at least 3 outages in less than a year.

Can anyone confirm if belong uses the same infra as Telstra? Or maybe they do but not the inferior part of it?

  • check with other people in the building to see if they had outages at the same time with different ISPs. It could be problems with NBN rather than your ISP and if this is the case, switching ISPs won't help

  • i have FTTB with optus in Sydney, speeds are generally good and havent experienced a outage in 6 months. The last week or two i have noticed speeds drop as low as 3MB/s during peak hours but generally i get 90-95mb/s. I have no trouble downloading a 20-30GB game in 40-50 mins. About to change to telstra though as optus wont give me a AC modem for free. Stuck with their crappy 802.11n sagemcom that cant bridge to a descent router..
