Used Car under $10K, for a New Family

Hello OBs, first time poster here :)

looking for suggestions for a reliable (preferably Japanese) used car for under 10K, key requirements:
Pram friendly boot and able to carry a lot of cargo when moving (folding seats in the hatch is a massive plus)
Safety features (airbags, ABS)
Auto (wife doesn't drive manual)
Cruise control (heavy foot)

Was initially looking at the 08 Corolla Conquest hatch, Mazda 3 hatch and the Tiida, all really good in hatch variants but may not be pram friendly, the sedan variants will work but will be a bit limited with cargo sizes

Would appreciate suggestions/experiences with the mentioned cars and others as well

Cheers

      +1 for Nossan, great cars…..

  • Probably get a current model Nissan Pulsar close to that…
It's a pretty massive car, largest in its class.
Resale should even be reasonable since they've lost so much so quickly.

Be warned that All Japanese Autos are CVT…(correct me if I'm wrong anyone)

  • pram friendly, I'd be looking at larger cars than those mentioned.

    • Single pram will be fine for any of them.

      • perhaps, I just enjoyed the space that a dual cab ute affords.

  • Mazda 6 wagon (2009+). Toyota RAV4 (2006+)

Wagons and prams work very well together.

  • My Yaris fits a pram and can fold down seats so you've got a large cargo carrier when you are only carrying 2 people.

    • there's a reason why many people fit cargo barriers in wagons and vans.

Keeps the kids in the back.

    • does the Yaris have a 2JZ-GTE shoehorned in? just noticed your username.

  • Honda Jazz. Rear seats fold especially low, creating a flexible and regularised cargo volume that is large for its class.

Why have there been so many posts recently from people wanting car recommendations?

Anyway, I would recommend a Toyota Camry. Not an exciting car I know, but practical and pretty spacious. There are some good examples listed for a little over $10k, so with negotiation you should be able to get them for around $10k. Examples include:

agree here, for reliability the toyota camry are a very good option

      • I also agree with a camry , Hyundai i30 Wagon or a Ford Mondeo wagon yet .I can personally recommend Pickles auctions.my family members have bought ex gov. Mondeo and a Camry hybrid in the $10k-$15k range, with a 5yr extended warranty for $500.

  • My recommendation would be a Kia Cerato hatch. We sold our 2011 model 6 months ago for $10k and that was with only 50k km and still had 6mths factory warranty on it. So you could definitely find a good one within your budget.

    Reasons:
    - At the time it was the largest boot in its class - bigger than Corolla etc - easily fit our large pram and groceries (I have hired both Corolla and Tiida in the past and couldn't believe how small their boots were)
    - Has all your required features (auto/cruise/folding seats/airbags/ABS)
    - 2L engine - goes well
    - cheaper than the competition, not because they aren't good cars, just because everyone seems to have a preference for Corolla's & Mazda 3's and still thinks Kia's are junk

    Car Auctions

    Mannheim Altona
    Pickles Sunshine

    or your local branch

ANYTHING less than 3 years ex-Govt with service records.

I bought a 2.5 year old Cruze Hatchback, 50000KM for about $10k late year. Great family car too.

    Flawless kids car.

    • Haha cruze

    • Flawless kids car because after a year or two having a messy interior won't make any difference to the tiny resale value.

    10k car and family,
    dont have a family.

  • I've got a low km 2008 Nissan Xtrail for sale if you're in Sydney. $10k

    Toyota Aurion
    Toyota Camry
    Honda Accord Euro
