Anyone Travelled (Flight Overseas) with a Drone ?

After jumping on the GC - HCM AirAsia deal from the Deals thread, we are planning on taking our P3 Pro on its maiden overseas flight. (On board preferably?)

We have a carbon fibre travel backpack from ebay which is pretty sturdy!

Does anyone have any experience taking a P3 or a similar drone on a flight?

Gracias!!

I've never had the experience of bringing a drone before.

I can't see any issue with a drone onboard. Check the lithium battery rating to make sure it's clearly marked with the specifications (and that it's within their allowed range).

Also it's AirAsia, so the number of pieces of carryon luggage is something to keep in mind.

Where it might cost you is when you take it through customs in HCM. If they notice the drone and you're vietnamese-looking, there's a possibility you might be up for a little "coffee money". Keep a loose $10 or $20 in your pocket for this.

There's no issue with taking UAVs on planes. Just make sure the batteries are easily accessible as security may want to inspect them. I travelled through China and Malaysia with my DJI Mavic Pro, Dec 2016. At most of the security scans. They asked me to take all the batteries out for inspection.

  • I think drone's are banned in some countries. Its better to check the rules in destination country as well.

  • Just check it into checked baggage.

You can check the UAV into checked baggage. I personally wouldn't recommend it.

But batteries must be carried on carry on.

    • Expensive things like that don't necessarily make it out of customs in HCMC.

Yeah, last flight I took I was unfortunate enough to sit next to a passenger who droned on and on with boring stories.

    :)

  • thanks guys! will be taking it on board :) did some research and will be applying for a permit (somehow, if i find the website of the govt agency lool) . happy droning to us!

  • UPDATE: took the P3Pro to Fiji on board JetStar. Absolutely no hassle anywhere with anything, xray screening, security etc. - backpack wasn't even asked to be opened a single time. It was just like carrying any other carry on bag.

Upon entering Fiji, they must have saw the DJI sticker on the backpack or whatever, so the officer pointed to the bag and asked me : "Drone?" , i said yeah, he grabbed a form for me to sign that had the legislation re: UAV's printed on it and me acknowledging not to fly over 200m and close to airport etc. He had a bunch of the forms sitting around, so Im guessing lots of drones come in and out! Again, no inspection or anything. All in all process took about 2 minutes extra.

    Hope this helps someone!
