Blurb: Deep into the twenty-first century, the line between man and machine has been inexorably blurred as humans rely on the enhancement of mechanical implants and robots are upgraded with human tissue. In this rapidly converging landscape, cyborg superagent Major Motoko Kusanagi is charged to track down the craftiest and most dangerous terrorists and cybercriminals, including “ghost hackers” who are capable of exploiting the human/machine interface and reprogramming humans to become puppets to carry out the hackers’ criminal ends. For those who want the hard copy Kodansha have recently released GitS 1, 1.5 and 2 in hardcover and can be had at the ol' book depository for $27.37, $19.07, $39.04.
I wonder if they'll re-enact Motoko's lesbian scene? I think Scarlett Johansson would've turned the role down if they added it in, but here's hoping.
P.S. the movie is based on the Mamoru Oshii's film which is loosely based on the manga. Mamoru's film is a pretty faithful 'loose interpretation' and most of the themes, characters and most of the plot of the first volume but there are several changes (e.g. that lesbian scene didsn't make the cut because it didn't really add anything to the plot, Masamune is a pervert, also the Mamoru's film was set in Hong Kong, and it's been flooded cos climate change, but the manga is set in Japan). Mamoru's second GitS film has a completely original plot not taken from Masamune's second volume however and both are pretty meh.

I think all 3 are censored. see https://www.amazon.com/Ghost-Shell-1-Deluxe/dp/1632364212/re…. If you guys want the original, might want to look for the older paperback edition.

      • I think you're right :(.

An uncensored version was later released by Dark Horse Comics on October 6, 2004. The censored version of the Dark Horse manga was later republished by Kodansha Comics USA on October 13, 2009.

It's a shame, on one hand the nudity doesn't really add anything to the story, but on the other hand censorship sucks. Oh well, guess I will hold onto my old Dark Horse Paperbacks. Here I was, thinking of replacing them with the hardcover versions.

        • It is only 2 pages (1 page and couple of panels), but yeah would have preferred the original in hardcover too. The bookdepository prices for 1 and 1.5 are pretty decent (cheaper than from Amazon incl shipping once cashrewards is factored in)

  • Anyone know, what's the chronological order to watch GITS? Been wanting to pick up this series, but am so overwhelmed with all these other different releases of the series.

    • Each of the three video chronologies can be watched in any order, as they are separate plots with characters that have the same name in slightly different universes and similar themes of identity and humanity in a world where people's brains are computers and can be easily hacked/wiped etc (if I had to distil GitS into a sentence).
      The three series are:
Oshii's films (GitS 1, 2, there's GitS 2.0 which is a partial CGI redo of GitS 1, most people prefer the original, I'm on the fence and own both, but the plot is the same, watch either GitS 1 or GitS 2.0 don't need to watch both to get the story, GitS 2: Innocence is pretty meh)
      - watch GitS 1 then GitS 2: Innocence (or skip it, there's some nice fight scenes at the end but Oshii went a bit 'full philosophical' in Innocence)
Stand Alone Complex - the 00's TV series, there's 2 TV series each 2 cors and a movie, Solid State Society, there's also a rehash movie which condenses all of the major 'plot' episodes of each series into a film length movie (Laughing Man for season 1, Individual Eleven for the season 2 aka 2nd gig)
SAC is full of technobabble and I often got the impression that they were inventing new words for the sake of it (neologisms), especially in the plot episodes. The standalone episodes (aka side plot) were less pretentious and more entertaining, IMHO. It's probably worth while watching at least Oshii's first film before watching SAC as you won't have to concentrate so hard on who the people are.
The order to watch the SAC stuff is GitS: SAC (season 1) -> GitS: SAC 2nd GIG -> GitS: SAC SSS
The newest one is Arise, which comprises of 4 OVAs, which were then divided into 8 episodes (Arise – Alternative Architecture) and adds on another 2 episodes as a bridge to the film which is simply titled GitS: The New Film. The order between the OVAs and the TV series are slightly different, but it doesn't really matter which order you watch them as it should make sense either way. The OVAs are listed chronologically but the TV series may potentially make more sense, especially if you're new to GitS.
I would probably watch it GitS: AAA (the TV series) -> GitS: The New Film
If you wanted to know which order to watch the three chronologies in, I'd watch the first Oshii film (or read the first volume of the manga), then start at either SAC or Arise, they're unrelated so there is no need to watch one to understand the other.

  • Seems like a pretty dark plot for a comic.

  • Awesome e¡ robot boobies
