Naked DSL

Fellow OZB'ers:

Forgive my lack of knowledge, I am seeking your help to understand what I can purchase as new broadband for my home:

I am moving to a new home and have seen some deals on Whistleout that say "phone line required." I have no need for a phone line (monthly fees). Can I just activate e.g. a Telstra phone line, connect to a "Naked ADSL" service (say Dodo or TPG), then cancel the Telstra phone line to save on the Telstra monthly fees? My friend purchased an apartment and ordered a Naked ADSL service which works for him - he says he does not pay any line rental extra and never ordered one. Also, he says in his old home he ordered a Telstra phone line, connected to ADSL, then cancelled the Telstra phone line. Thanks for your help!

  • I'm on Naked ADSL but I didn't activate a phone service before I went Naked, it was existing so I can't comment on your move. Perhaps with a new home you might have to pay for some wiring, dunno. Is the home new new or just new to you? However technically what you hope not to pay for is a phone service by Telstra, the phone line is still there and still connected to the exchange, but you probably understand that.

And also check if your new home is NBN enabled, that changes the whole story.

  • Thanks for your comment. The home is not new and I assume a phone line was previously used. But like anybody else would do I assume the people that left terminated the phone line service when they left. So I am not sure if that means I need to call telstra to reconnect or not. How can I find out of there is a number if the service was terminated? Sounds like you did the same as my mate: order Naked ADSL and not worry about anything else. No NBN yet.

  • What you're doing is trading a service (landline) for a few bucks a month and it will be harder to churn or change providers.

  • Thanks Dij1! Can you explain what that means? I am trading landline service for a few bucks means … ? And without a phone line it will be harder to churn? Again, sorry, I am not an expert here.

  • Why not just order a phone line + ADSL bundle and then just not plug in a phone? I find that naked ADSL offerings usually have inferior allowance to bundles for the same price.

  • Geek001: I try to be super cheap: For example TPG for 39.90 or Dodo for 34.99. Basically saving $$$.

    • I think you will need to factor in the cost of keeping the phone line as your connection will not be strictly "naked". I had an arrangement like this in the last place that I stayed in, Telstra for phone and TPG for ADSL. I forgot to update my credit card details with Telstra when I changed credit card. So when my bill was overdue, Telstra cut off my phone line and my ADSL connection with TPG was severed as well. It took Telstra 2 weeks to reconnect me, it was a really painful 2 weeks without internet.

Not sure if it is like that now, this would have been about 5 years ago.

      • Thanks! So your view confirms that you need to pay the phone line to get the Naked ADSL. Weird that my mate is running is Naked ADSL without paying for the phone line. Thanks again!

  • It may also say this cause the area is connected to a RIM cabinet, not direct to the exchange.
As a result, you can ONLY purchase ADSL through Telstra (or Telstra Wholesale) and they REQUIRE that you also have an active telephone service, Telstra do not offer Naked DSL on any of their ADSL services..
Call your preferred ISP to discuss with them. They will be able to confirm whether you need an active phone service or not.
