Trek X-Caliber 7 - Is This a Good Price?

I'm looking to buy a mountain bike for trail riding that's around $1000.

Trek X-caliber 7 has good reviews which is why I'm searching for this bike. Other suggestions are welcome. Though I'm not looking into second hand because I'm not sure what to look for when inspecting.

I went to Cycles Galleria in Melbourne CBD and asked if there was any old models. Unfortunately they had none but the sales rep said there's a sale going on. RRP for the 2017 bike is $1299, the sale makes it $1029.

It's very tempting, but I'm also going to try to ask them to throw in some accessories. I've been riding Kmart bikes all my life, so I'm not sure how bargaining works in bicycle shops.

TLDR: Is $1029 for a 2017 Trek X-Caliber 7 a good price? Will I be able to haggle down the price a bit more?

    I have he X-Cal 7 (2016) - I remember it being very similar pricing when I bought it… BUT, Trek have or had a deal with Bupa and I ended up getting a couple of hundred off. I think I paid around the 800-mark.

    Comfortable bike not a top of the range MTB but it gets me around the trails.

    I think the price wont budge much but you could ask them to chuck in first 2 or 3 services for free. Alternatively, look around for 2016 models, it looks like they are going for $6-700. E.g. https://www.evanscycles.com/en-au/trek-x-caliber-7-2016-moun…

      Thanks for the reply. With Bupa, is it discount off the sale price or RRP? My friend is with BUPA, so if I can get more discounts, I might ask her to come along with me ;)

    I think it's a flat15% off - the retailer claims it back from Bupa. I think. So they bike shop won't care if it's RRP or already discounted.. I could be wrong though.

    Any reason you are going a 29er over 27.5?

      No preference, depends on the frame size that fits me. I think my frame size is 15.5 so I'll probably be getting the 27.5.

      I got the bike yesterday for $999 plus a free helmet. Tried to get him to do better but he wouldn't budge.

        I'm looking at purchasing a bike for around the same price, how have you found the Trek x-cal 7? Any pros and cons? Any feedback would be appreciated cheers

          This is my first $$$ bike so I can't really compare it with other similar bikes. I haven't ridden much yet but I really like it so far. The only con I would say is when I shift up gears it's not as smooth as I'd like. However, compared to my old bikes (big w/kmart), this bike feels much better to ride on (easier to pedal, handles are comfortable etc). I hope this helps :)
