AppleTV: Opinions?

Hi,

I know Apple products tend to be either well liked or hated, but I wanted to hear the opinions of the experts on OzBargain.

Is the AppleTV good value?

I'd just be buying the cheapest model they have available.

Thank you!

  • it gets youtube, netflix etc to your 'non smart' TV.
the control is a small footprint on your coffee table which is nice.
my old housemate had one but i ended up getting a PS4 and we all use that for these purposes now.

never used for its rental service though so cant comment on that

Depends, do you have an Apple household? What are you wanting out of the device?

The Xiaomi Mi TV Box certainly ticks more boxes if you want more out of it

If you have iOS devices then airplay on the Apple TV is great. You can save some money by buying the 3rd gen version (you can't download apps on 3rd gen, only can use the preloaded ones).
A cheaper option would be a chromecast but the apps that support it are limited at least on iOS.

If you want to run apps and don't have iOS devices you may want to look elsewhere.

Get a android box it's two locked down of a device unless you want to stream it off your apple phone that's the awesomeness of a android box where you don't have to on a android box
Unless you find a jailbroken one

Love your android - thats ok. But please don't mis inform others about another product based on how you assume it will be used, thats just plain being mean

My guess is that is why others here have voted you down.

      • I only qouted him the choices you have on the apple box unless you have a iphone or iPad all good but if you haven't then your pretty much stuck on just using a couple of apps.
Where on the android you don't need a android phone or tablet to use it.

Don't get me wrong it's a great device but to get the true advantage of it you need a iPhone or iPad always connected and not everyone likes that.

Don't no about the latest one maybe it has been changed

In all honesty I still have the original apple tv locked away was running xbmc at the time but just to out dated now

        • Point is, that it is a stand alone device, doesnt need iPhone or iPad, so you were misleading with your original comment (not saying that this was your original intention) . If you look at the op's other posts, he is not really into complex uses on any of his products as their name suggests. 😀

        • @RockyRaccoon:

I'm sure you haven't used it much to comment about the use of it unless you just want to just stream YouTube or Netflix or just some movies from the apple store there is not much you can use it for without a iPad or iPhone

To be honest most tv,s these days do all the above without the need of this box

        • @stussy: a couple of apps?

There’s currently over 1,000 apps and games on the Apple TV Apple Store.

          Again you are simply misinformed.

Now whether or not these interest you or the OP is another matter. But update your understanding before giving out advice

          http://www.knowyourmobile.com/devices/apple-tv-2015/23346/be…

Or you can use airplay to stream from a Mac

and if you have a PC, you can use airplay with this program

          https://www.5kplayer.com/airplay/airplay-pc-to-apple-tv.htm

        • @RockyRaccoon:

Well as the OP stated he wants the cheapest model there for

          https://www.lifewire.com/can-you-install-apps-on-the-apple-t…

Like you said you still need something to stream it so yes it isn't a stand alone :)

        • +1

@stussy: Correct, so explaining that the AppleTV3 being the cheapest will have the limitations, whereas the AppleTV4 won't. would be of help rather than just saying as you did originally

Anyway, this "discussion" will at least assist the OP, so all is good. Hope you enjoyed it like I have 😀

          @RockyRaccoon:

          I sure did :)

  • I have an Apple household (1 iMac, 2 Macbooks, 1 iPhone and 1 iPad)

I use Chromecast and I use Kodi on an Android phone. All my movie & Tv streaming needs are met (for free) and I can also cast movies and songs from my Apple devices.

I never even considered getting Apple TV.

Steve Jobs was a straight up genius!

  • Two main limitations of the apple tv for me:
    1) No 4K
    2) No Prime video.

The Nvidia Shield ticks both of these boxes.

    • Bit pricey though and I'm sure you can get both those ticks for 1/4 off the price of a shield

Maybe won't be as powerful but reasonable :)

And as for 4k streaming if only there was more of a variety :(

  • Who downloads/streams 4K in Australia? Surely only a select few….

    • for the discerning porn connoisseur

    • I can if I want, it's not too prohibitive for me with 100Mbit cable - about 20GB for a hour long TV episode.

Very noob friendly box to get netflix on a dumb TV. does the job.

  • I have an Amazon Fire TV 4k box, Roku 4k box, and an Apple TV. The only one that gets used is the Apple TV

  • Your replies are appreciated!

I'd love to read a guide that compares the AppleTV to Chromecast or other options there are.

  • I've been meaning to write something up but life keeps on getting in the way. Oh, forgot I also have a Raspberry Pi with Recallbox installed

  • That sounds great!

The AppleTV is much more expensive than similar devices like Google's Chromecast, but is it worth it?
