PSA: Do Not Put Skins or Stickers on Nintendo Switch!

To the OZB members would have taken advantage of the Nintendo Switch deals already:

DO NOT PUT ANY SKINS OR STICKERS ON YOUR NINTENDO SWITCH CONSOLE OR JOYCONS AS ADHESIVE APPEARS TO DESTROY THE FINISH

Explanation here: https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/5xc5si/warn…

If you have skins or stickers in the mail, do not apply them to the console until clarification comes out from Nintendo.

Comments

  • Seriously? :( When I eventually purchase my Switch, I already had some idea as to the skin pattern I was going to use. :/

Don't blame you. It's got the lines and edges that would make customisations really stand out.

Also being a portable there's more incentive to personalise it (IMO), like a phone case, so you know which is yours if there's ever a group with a few from a quick glance.

Something surely will come out in the future that will be compatible, but until then it was great of a company that makes skins to refund all their customers that bought Switch skins, and put out a PSA that they haven't been able to find an adhesive that will work yet to warn others.

Aren't these things made for children?

    Probably best to tell them

    • +1

Have you noticed anything when u follow zelda around the bush? Lol

    • -8

Yes video games are for children, but as a hobby, adults take part in video games also. They are aimed at children, no question.

      • I'm not talking about video games in general. I'm talking about NIntendo products.

        • -6

They are kid and family friendly products, no question, all these game console makers are trying to get kids to buy them, they're basically made for them (Sony, Microsoft included), difference is Nintendo is very open about selling their products to children/families and regular folks.

Microsoft, Sony hide it, but its clear the blockbuster / edgy cinematic games are aiming for the teen/tween film going blockbuster movie market.

They introduced the ratings system years ago to avoid parents freaking out, making them less accountable.

And while the hobby is enjoyed by adults, we know its for kids. As people have stated, they are electronic toys found in department stores like big ws and targets next to the other toys. Even the collectible figures are next to them too.

        • @BNN:
That is your incorrect belief. Games are in entertainment sections of department stores, not in toy sections. If anything, they are alongside DVDs and electronics. The gaming industry would not be bigger than the movie industry if games were targeted only at kids. A company like bungie would simply not invest hundreds of millions into developing Destiny just to target a small fraction of society. The average gamer age is above 30.

Discussed this before, no need to bring it up again directly. Maybe you didnt read what i wrote previously, if you disagree with what i said previous and didn't like the way i explained it for whatever reason, fair enough, thats cool, chiming in again isn't really necessary though.
          Would be pointless.

          @BNN:
I responded to you saying "As people have stated", when that person was you and you were factually and statistically wrong. You still are.

      • +3

        Wrong, most gamers are adults.

Games have not just been for kids since… Well since we all grew up and kept gaming.

        • Absolutely not, the whole fiasco with NES classic selling out and everything? That's all teenagers.

I think the reason why games can be seen as a "mainly for kids" might be because gaming is a fairly young invention (compared to other form of entertainments). Heck, there are arguments on whether games can be considered an art, the fact that we can argue about that shows that the industry is not just for kids. Some people might say that a lot of games are for teenagers and kids. Even if that is true, I am sure a large proportion of film industry is pornography, no one says the film industry is for pornography.

          Is most gamers adult though?

        • -5

          @ozbjunkie

They skew the stats and the industry downplays it, they say its only 20-30% kids but they downplay the Minecraft audience, Call of Duty audience, mobile, phone games and the fact most parents/adults have to work… Kids have the most time to game, on mobile, consoles too, not debatable. Kids are the majority of video gamers playing games in reality.

Minecraft is the biggest game at the moment, and that is wildly popular with kids, and even has phone/tablet versions.
They even use it in schools to teach and learn with…

Truth is the stats are skewed to make adults feel better about the hobby, because lets face it, alot of them are insecure about it. Websites and polls twist numbers to inflate the figures.

Many adults that buy the systems for multimedia or for kids to play and them to supervise, but the industry includes those adults to increase numbers so website internet gamers can feel better about their hobby, which is for kids.

It is what it is. Like i said, you can enjoy games, but like Star Wars, action figures, collector cards, its for kids. Video games are right next to the other toys in many stores for a reason.

Yes other stores carry them in other areas, but the main ones for consumers, yeah they're near the toys. Even Eb games has alot of toys, amiibos and action figures near games. Game= Toy. There are toys right near the other video games at JB too as a matter of fact. Because games are toys, perhaps thinly disguised as movies now in many cases, but yeah. Some collector editions come packed in with action figure toys too.

You can still play and enjoy them, just dont need to be so worried about status of gaming. Not that important.

        • +1

          @BNN:
Kids are not the majority of gamers. You are just making things up as you go. Can you give me the slightest confidence you know how to actually program before dismissing gaming as 'for kids'.

        • I somewhat agree with this. My son doesn't play console games. But that's because I don't let him play. He plays educational games or really casual ones like sago mini etc. I don't want him to get addicted to games when he's still learning discipline and self control.

        • +2

          @BNN:

          Nah, don't believe you.

Most gamers are adults. Stop appealing to store layouts or you'll have to accept that chewing gum is a lolly.

        • @Oversimplified:

Pretty sure the meme is that the internet is for pornography. I personally only visit OzBargain during my refractory period.

Games are, at their best, interactive art, and are certainly not a kid's thing - I don't care what retirees and vacuous club-hoppers have to say about it.

        • @ozbjunkie: please. I had the song Internet is for porn stuck in my head for the entire weekend already.

        • @Oversimplified:

Oh i didn't know there's a song too - well I just finished another round… Time for a sing along while I wait.

        • @ozbjunkie: ironically since it is from a show, avenue Q, it's fun to singalong. I should really go and see it at one point.

Also if stores are always right about categorisations, we'd have to accept that pineapples go on pizza. Ugh.

          @ozbjunkie:

Call of Duty is a very casual game, not hardcore lol. Never said Call of Duty wasnt popular lol. Nothing adult about it, nice one though. Lol. Most modern first and third person shooting games are one of the top casual genres that sell in the millions. Its very popular with kids/teens. Its a simple online shooter with a hollywood scripted single player campaign. They make them easy so kids can play them. Most adults that pick them up because they enjoy easy games, they memorize the same control patterns and they feel like they're pretending they're in a blockbuster Transformers movie, reliving their childhood. Some sections are very "on rails" with little gameplay on occasion or overscripted sections.

They are generally quite fun once you progress a bit into the campaigns (some better with gameplay then others depending on which game in the series it is), but not as involved as some other games, and very similar, minus some changes to futuristic weapons etc. Far better then the Uncharteds though, which really need to focus on actual gameplay more then trying to make a Teens Indiana Jones movie knockoff.

COD games are basically Hollywood action movies with over the top silly acting and scripting, very Brukheimer, Michael Bay doing Transformers, or any other millitary sci fi for the teen blockbuster audience. No different from the Marvel movies.

Ask any kid today, they know Minecraft and Call of Duty more then other video games. Wonder why.

Minecraft isn't that popular? Minecraft is the second best selling video game of all time! its popularity can be attributed to its popularity with kids, teens.
Parents/Guardians that play the game do so mostly to set it up for their kids to play or lets players on youtube creating minecraft videos for kids to watch for entertainment. Schools even use the game to teach.

Lol. I didn't say Minecraft was excluded, just downplayed, same with mobile/tablet games, other casual games, just pointing out who really engages with the Call of Duty, GTA games. Kids/teens have more time to play then anyone. Numbers skewed.

If you use a little critical thinking, you can see that the popularity with adults is somewhat exaggerated while other numbers are downplayed and skewed. They do it to make adults and the geekdom of the internet feel more secure in the hobby, but at the end of the day, We know they are just toys, there is a reason open world games are referred to as "Sandbox" games.
Either way video games are made for kids, they market to them directly, who they intend to buy them.

You can find action figures/collectibles in the games aisle and Halo figures in the toy section one aisle over.

        • @BNN:
Please stop abusing the word 'skewed'. It does not mean what you think it means. Maybe stop fixating on the layout of your favourite action figure toyshop hangout while you are at it. You also write "Hardcore gamer is an over inflated minority that is very loud on the internet. " followed by lengthy unresearched, gutshot dissertations. The average game is made for a General audience rating.

          ESRB Ratings assigned 2010:

          1% Early childhood
          55% Everyone
          18% Everyone 10+
          21% Teen
          5% Mature

        • @BNN:

Care to share your critical thinking?

All I see is assertion without evidence.

And as below, skewed has a specific stastical meaning…

    • I thought Nintendo would be the violence averse parents choice of allowable video game for children, but in fact I have a few 30 year old mates who just love the Nintendo artstyle and appeal to the casual gamer.

I don't get it, I'm in it for the head shots brah.

      • -2

Majority of "gamers" are casual as are most games, open world, sports, action adventures, cinematic first person and third person shooter, racers, those are casual games that sell well, consistently, along with other mainstream titles from Nintendo like platformers, Zeldas, party/minigames etc.

Hardcore gamer is an over inflated minority that is very loud on the internet. Nintendo is definitely family friendly though, where as the other two downplay it, they also like to count the adults that buy systems to let their kids play supervised, or those that buy the systems as media devices: as gamers, but they really barely engage with the hobby.

but yeah they're 30 somethings playing (exagerrated given the need to attend to work hours compared with youth) but at the end of the day you still have these companies marketing to the kid/teen crowd, and thats who they really are for, historically and today especially.

With so much oversimplification, focus on summer blockbuster visuals for the teen/tween film crowd that want to see the next Marvel comic film or blockbuster Nolan type movie.

Adult gamers just get insecure about it, and try to play up the skewed statistics, most of those adult gamers numbers are overinflated, kids/teens have more time to game and the industry downplays the young playing on Call of Duty, Minecraft, phone/tablets, etc….

Theres a reason why people complain about Call of Duty being just kids shouting swear words at people. All these lets play gaming channels comment sections are full of children telling people to hurt themselves, arguing over console wars, and posting reworked memes.

    This is stupid.
Nintendo have officially licensed skins. I doubt they all have this issue.

In the link he says they were applying and removing unlicensed skins continuously over 4 days.
    This isn't what people do.

    • +2

It's early days, but you are welcome to put skins on yours if you think the risk is a lot smaller than the largest skin company.

Making skins is pretty much all what DBrand does. They are not a small company. They could have made millions from Switch skins but have found skins to be detrimental to the finish of the product rather than protect it.

I'd also be worried about what happens to the finish over time with general wear and tear such as sweat+friction from hands if applying and reapplying skins is taking off the finish.

      • +1

If nintendo's official skin damages my switch it's their fault.

I haven't had the issue DBrand has with my skin and i've had it on for 2-3 days.

        • If nintendo's official skin damages my switch it's their fault.

Are there official ones? The only ones that I have found are the Zelda Collector's Edition ones.

I'd hate to be Nintendo if these damaged the Switch too…

        • @IceCreamBandit: Holy crap those prices scalpers are paying.

Sorry for late reply, but yes this is the skin I'm speaking about. Actually is third party but covered with switch logos + "seal of quality", and is licensed Zelda. As far as I'm concerned it's official nintendo imo.

  • Anyone have a red gloss Wii? That surface is a nightmare. The Wii stand and official cloth will leave a mark.

  • The decal girl skins work great, also PDP ones, only 3M adhesive is ruining the paint job.

  • Is the finish 'soft touch' ? If yes that thing will be destroyed in Australian heat within a year with normal use anyway.
