Getting Freebies with Mobile Plans

Hi Guys,

I was just wondering what sort of things you bargain for when you sign up for a new mobile plan?

Last year i got a free car charger with my nokia n97. I am looking at signing up for a Samsung Galaxy S with Optus. The Optus warehouse does not have any stock, but i was looking at trying to get it instore so i can get it asap. Buying online offers 2months free, so i was hopefully looking at getting '2months free' worth of accessories when i buy instore. I am in Sydney.. so if you have been able to get some pretty cool freebies with your phone, please let me know where i should go to sign up. I was kind of hoping for a 16gb memory card to make up for my downgrade in external memory on my n97 32gb (the Galaxy S is only 16gb.. hence wanting a 16gb memory card). What do you think my chances would be getting one of these?

I can go to Optus World, Telechoice, Strathfield Car Radio, etc (anyone who sells optus mobiles on a plan). Ultimately, i want the best deal.. any ideas?

Thanks

  • You'd be best buying it online. I haven't herd of any stores offering any bonuses. There isn't any promotions for it and they don't seem to do any special deals just between you and the manager either. The only deal I know about is contracted Sony phones coming with a free Sony PSP.

Samsung Galaxy S is a very decent phone if you don't mind the Crappy UI.

I guess you'd get the phone on a $49/month contract. Buying online saves you $98. That's enough to buy yourself a 32gig Memory Card. I brought myself a SanDisk 16gig Memory card 10 months ago for $51. If you simply cannot buy online I'd suggest seeing the manager at an Optus World store they will be your best bet. But the deal they offer you won't beat 2 months free I can assure you that. Buying the phone from their store helps pay for their overheads, buying online there is no middle man.

Additionally anyone could have gotten a free car-kit for their N97. I bought a 5800 from Hong Kong upon release, I found a listed bargain on here where I could request my free car kit if I didn't get one. Sent them my IMEI number and they sent me a free car kit and I didn't even buy my phone via. Nokia Australia. I got an offshore release.

Ok, so i've done a little bit of ringing around to see who could give me the best deal. These are the things i got offered:

Strathfield Car Radio 'x' location: screen protector and a case (have to order phone in)

Strathfield Car Radio 'y' location: 16gb memory card, screen protector (probably iphone 3gs size) and a car charger (phone is instock)

All Phones 'a' location: case or a car charger (phone is instock)

All phones 'b' location: 8gb memory card, silicon case and screen protector (phone is instock)

All Phones 'c' location: no accessories at all (phone is instock)

Telechoice 'x' location: screen protector. The guy didnt mention an 'incard' but i assume it would come with it (phone is instock)

Telechoice 'y' location: 'Incard' valid for 24months, case and a screen protector. Also possibly a 2gb memory card, but that could be at the cost of the case or screen protector.. not sure (phone is instock)

Has anyone else been offered better deals or do these seem the norm?

I think im going to go to Strathfield Car Radio 'y' location and pick it up in the next couple of days. I hope this also helps some people out there looking for what to bargain for.

Basically i rung up and asked them if they had the phone instock. Then i asked what sort of deal they could do for me, and told them about Optus' online 2-3months free offer. Then they rattled off what they could give me.. i even tried bargaining over the phone.. and the above deals is what they coughed up

  • you'd be best off with the 2mths free thingy.

afterall, its $98 (assuming you are on 49 cap) in value. For me, I'm on the $59 social cap plan (which you can choose in the optus website, i doubt you can do so now.) So the savings I have are significantly higher than some crappy protector or memory card.
