Found another great travel option to the other side of the world, this time to Russia.

Flying Vietnam Airlines and with great stopovers in both Saigon and Hanoi, so you can soak up the vibes of Northern and Southern Vietnam!

Weather in Vietnam is quite humid this time of year, and it's nice in Moscow, so a great time of year to visit.

You will need to organise a visa in Vietnam with fees roughly $39USD per person

Heaps to see and do in Moscow when you arrive.
You can even buy some lovely Donald Trump souvenirs while you're there!

Flight dates vary but include dates in July and August 2017.

Departing Sydney $842
Departing Melbourne $861

Remember to take advantage of Flight Centre's $1 price beat guarantee if you'd rather book via a bricks and mortar store.

If you fly into HCM Airport you can do the visa on arrival, its AUS $40 and takes 15 mins.

I now have dual passports, ie Italian and Aussie so with the Italian no visa needed

BONZA flight offer, the USSR Visa is a bit of a nightmare and expensive, Putin wants to keep all the babes to himself:-)

The Russian visa process is bit of a pain and takes a while - be aware.

    http://russia.embassy.gov.au/mscw/how_to_apply.html

"Applications for Visitor (subclass 600) and Temporary Work (subclass 400) should be lodged at the Australian Embassy Moscow at least 6 weeks ahead of your travel date."

You found visa requirements for the Russians travelling to OZ. What we really need to look at is this:

      http://sydney.mid.ru/en_GB/web/sydney-en/tourist-visa

      $135 buckaroos for a tourist visa..geez…

      • Sorry navigated through a few pages. I was aware of the process but wanted to add a source.

I noticed the cost as well, geez indeed.

    • It takes a lot less time if you sort out the Russian visa in a neighbouring country.

I last went to Russia in 2007. I was a bit bored in Lithuania and thought it'd be more fun across the border. Went to the train station to see one of the travel agencies in the morning, paid about AU$80 (from memory) and picked up my passport with a visa in it the same afternoon.

Pretty sure they were a bit of a dodgy operator as it had details of where I was staying (I hadn't booked anywhere) and the tour company that was taking me around (I was travelling independently). Still, I was let through after a couple of questions and eye rolls from the friendly Muscovite manning the immigration booth.

Australians have it pretty easy compared to people travelling on US passports. You pretty much have to disclose your entire education / work history as well as that of your parents! Any military or government history is very closely scrutinized.

  • is it true that there are lots of hot women in moscow

    • I heard somewhere once that there was "Strangers in Moscow"

    • Nope. Definitely not true.

    • -1

Those hot ones were exported, only fat lazy ones stay

      • ravings ..

    • Yes, i'm here now and they are all supermodels, it's amazing!

      • please. is this true?

        • Yes it's 100% true, go check it out you won't be disappointed

    • Ukraine is better than Russia

      • There is nothing in it, but the Russian women have better personalities

        • +1

          IMHO
          better personalities : Belorus
          better body : Ukrain
          smarter chicks : Russia
definitely there is some level of generalisation in here.

  • I do not quite understand why Russia is so strict on visa requirements for tourists from developed countries ?
Tourists always bring money in the country.
    Don't they need money ?

    • +3

Because their government thinks that most of the westerners are spies who support opposition to the Putin's regime and who want to destroy their country.

      • +2

Russians have to apply for visas to go to most western countries. Reciprocity. The application process to get a visa to Russia is the same as it has been for many, many years. A bit easier now with online forms. Registration of the visa in Russia seems a bit easier. But the visa to Russia is still much more effort than most countries. That's for certain.

For a good explanation on getting a visa, See: https://russiau.com/getting-russian-visa-australia/

      • No, it's just because they think that too many kebab people/potential suicide bombers got Aussie passport xD

    • +6

Tit for tat mate. It costs Russians at least $135 and months of wait to get a simple 600 class tourist visa to Oz.

      • What you are forgetting about is that many Russians would want to stay in Australia illegally.
How many Ozzies would want to stay in Russia?

        • +3

I don't know. Those who do… we never hear back from them.

        • +3

Any data reference? I don't think Russians wanna stay in oz.

        • +1

I don't think you have any statistics to remind me about what I am forgetting, however I don't think it is important when it comes to tourist visas per se. In foreign policy reciprocity drives everything, if it costs AUD 135 for a Russian to get a visa to Oz, it will cost an Ozzie same AUD 135 to get a visa to Russia.

Yes, there could be additional requirements such as extra paperwork for visitors coming from not-so-developed or just too violent countries, but the visa process is primarily driven by the level of political relations between the countries, and as we all know, relations between Russia and Australia seen better days. It's just how it works.

        • @ZloyKrys:
Even though in some instances reciprocity takes place, most of the times it doesn't.
The Australians do not need travel visas to go to most of the countries or they can get visas on arrival. However, the citizens of those countries have to apply for a visa to Australia. And to get it is not easy at all.

As for the statistics you have asked about - Have you ever heard of a single Ozzie who tried to stay in Russia illegally? And yet, there are many Russians and other countries nationals who are trying to come and stay here illegally.

There is more to it. In addition to getting a visa, you will have to register your whereabouts while in Russia. This process goes back to the Soviet regime, where this way they wanted to keep you under control in case you are a spy.

        • +1

          @bob19:

Mate, repeating the same thing again does not make it credible. I've never heard of neither Russians who tried to stay in Oz illegally or other way round, in fact, Russia's net migration rate is positive, this means they actually attract migrants, this goes against your point, sorry.

As of the registration process, yes it is there as well as in other countries such as China and it applies not only to tourists but to their own citizens as well, but given they've never considered as Western countries, it looks like it's the way they live, why would we bother?

        • +2

          @ZloyKrys:
Russians generally prefer New Zealand to Australia.

Those moving to warmer climates generally move to places like Thailand.

Australia isn't high on the list of places where Russians want to live.

        • +1

Russia's intake of migrants is predominantly from ex Soviet republics like Tadjikistan and Uzbekistan.
And significant amount of Russians who consider leaving their Motherland are professionals.
So, stricktly speaking due to this process Russia becomes less Christian, less Russian and less educated.

        • @ZloyKrys:
Russia's net migration is positive only due to the influx of migrants from the poorest former Soviet republics, like Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, etc. and also due to annexation of Crimea in 2014.
At the same time hundreds of thousands of the most professional and educated people have been leaving Russia annually.

        • @bob19:

Well, I concur, however this too goes against your initial point - the most professional and educated people would have migrated to Australia using the skilled migration route which is there, quick and affordable. There is no need for the top crop to overstay on tourists visas and work cash in hand in sweatshops till they die or found by DIBP and kicked out of the country.

  • Gee this Russian deal Trumps all others!

I have travelled to Russia and I can highly recommend this information as unbiased and very helpful for getting a Russian visa without going through a commercial operator (middleman). Much simpler and cheaper to follow the information provided.

Moscow is the safest major European city. There are no such things as bad neighborhoods, or immigrant neighborhoods. You can walk down any street in the middle of the night, and nothing bad will ever happen to you.

      • That is true. Moscow is safe. You won't even see tipsy bogans in the streets on a Fri/Sat night in the city. Also local police don't care about foreigners.

      • safer than frankfurt? kek, i think not.

Isn't there visa free travel for the 2017 Fifa Confederation Cup held in June/July?

    • This sounds positive!

Seems like a Fan ID replaces the need to get a visa; not sure about ticket prices or how to specifically obtain a Fan ID prior to arriving in Russia.
Maybe by contacting the FFA they'll give more info.

      Good find!

      • To get a Fan ID, you will first have to buy a ticket for the game you want to watch.

…even with a valid ticket you will not be allowed into the stadium without your Fan ID. The Fan ID is a personalized plastic card bearing the holder's name, photo, personal data, and contact details. Children will need Fan IDs too.

After you have bought your game ticket, apply for your Fan ID. Your application will need to be approved first. You may apply through the portal or at one of the issuance centers (in the latter case you will have to visit the center twice).

  • I can't see the fares…
