Will Flash to DD-WRT Allow R7000 NetGear Nighthawk to make WAN with 4G Sierra 320U (Telstra USB)

So I have a working USB 320 U (Took a while but now running)
I have Netgear Nighthawk R7000 running stock firmware
Natively, it does not support USB modem (Has USB ports)

However, it appears that DD-WRT supports USB modems, inlcuding my model - https://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/3G_/_3.5G (Scroll down to Sierra). Seems the prominent release is Kongs.

Will this work?

Tomato or DD-WRT?

So far I have stuck with stock firmware to get hardware acceleration (whatever that really means in practice)

    Possibly
    Try it and see
At worst you can reflash stock firmware back onto it

Also as a fyi you are better off posting this question at the ddrwrt forums as you'll get much better answers

    Check out Asuswrt - http://xvtx.ru/xwrt/about.htm it supports 3G modems and the r7000 - https://www.asus.com/support/faq/1000807

It's based on the ASUS firmware. Quicker wifi than DD-WRT on the R7000 and a much easier to use interface.

    Highly recommended for the R7000

    • ok, finally had time.
Used the version (380) from 3 Feb.
It is quite a beautiful UX.
The option of USB being Primary WAN or Failover or load balance is quite cool

I get the Sierra 320 USB device detected.
I can put in the APN (Vodafone)

… but it doesn't seem to connect. Bummer.

Everything else is quite cool… May have to buy the hardware for the sim card; not sure if I am getting a setting wrong.

  • this looks very interesting… and retains hardware NAT translation. going to give it a go

(Reason I was hesitant on firmware move - Swtiching from a "top end" TPLINK to the R7000 a little while back, my synology NAS throughput went up 50%+ over wired and wifi links)
