Getting an award seat Using FF points < 2months out, possible?

So have around 120k Velocity and Qantas points. Plus 55k Amex MR points. Looking to fly to Europe (Scotland) around April 14th from Adelaide. Returing from anywhere in Europe if I had to really around the 26th. Also happy to do a fly out from Hk,Sin,Dps etc. Never used points before. Am I dreaming? PE flight or business I guess is the go. Even one way?

  • 120k total with VF and QF, or 120k each? Will need a breakdown if it is total.

    • 120k each with the Amex points that could go either way. Never used points before, all new. Seems an art form to get it right.

      • Amex points cant be transferred to Qantas unless you have Ascent Premium (eg. Platinum Charge card or similar).

        • Oh ok. But I believe u can transfer Amex plus Velocity to Singapore Air. Not sure if there are other combinations with other airlines . Qatar would be ideal.

@tunzafun001: Qatar is on OneWorld (same as Qantas). Unfortunately since you can't transfer points to Qantas, you arent going to get too far with them. Have guessed you have about 60k QFF points?

I can see availability one way on Qatar ADL-DOH in economy on 11 April. Price 56k QFF points + $312.42 in taxes. 104k points + $374.42 in business.

Much better option looks like ADL-FCO (Rome) via Dubai on Emirates (one way). Availability on Friday 14/4 in economy. 55k points + $274.52 in taxes.

Or ADL-DUB (Dublin) via Dubai one way economy, leaving 14/4, 60k points + $274.52 taxes.

Then tee up a cheap flight from there to wherever you are headed. Try to avoid London airports (for any journey) as the taxes are really high.

Havent looked at coming back yet, but will obviously need to be through Velocity/Krisflyer.

Struggling to find much in business this close.

Edit: looked at a few flights out of Dublin, looks like it would cost about 120k velocity points (or 82,800 points + $241.11 taxes) for an economy reward from there to ADL through Abu Dhabi and then Perth or Melbourne, leaving 26/4.

        • @djkelly69:
This is the magic I was looking for.
Qatar economy is about $1450 return. If I can get a cheap one way out of Inverness, Edinburgh, Glasgow or further a field in Munich,Rome,Amsterdam or Finland then the one ways u have listed might be a winner.
I have 100k in Qantas, but waiting on 30k points to come through from St George/bank SA credit card. Made the required spend 2 weeks ago. Have got about 120k in velocity as well (which I could top up with a further 55k Amex MR points). But would need to look at Singapore Air I guess as Etihads $200 Per sector is a joke.

    qantas.com.au

    have a look

OP has taken laziness to the next level. He is literally saying "I can't be bothered logging into Qantas.com.au to look for myself - can someone else log in and search for possible flights themselves?"

      • Yeah I know it does sound that way. But More about looking for those.Ozbargain geniuses who know of last minute loopholes etc. For example, Cathay might put unsold business class flights out in the last 2 weeks? Or maybe I've got best chance looking for flights out of 'x' location at the last minute etc etc.

  • 120K QF points ret J, or even PE is unlikely.

Best thing to do is to go on the website and have a look to see what's available!

Any seats that were available at the time you've taken to type out this post and read the replies will probably be gone by now! haha

If only there was some kind of website that allowed you to check how much flights are. Hmm. Sorry, can't help OP.

    • Be good if there was one that showed the price in points and $ over a space of 4 weeks for say 6 different depart and destination combinations.

Kayak allows for multiple destinations but only exact dates. Or exact destinations, but across a 3 day period or loosely across a month with Skyscanner. But it depends on how many days you stay, which I really don't understand why that matters. I just want the cheapest arrival and departure within that 4 week window.

Even a one off historical low in the past 12 months to get from point A to point B.

For example, a search for ADL to Edinburgh returns a historical low in the last 12months of an open jaw booking that went Adelaide to Singapore, Sin to Amsterdam, then Amsterdam to EDI. So you could look for that combo. Optifly is handy to see who flies to where, so you can try to link up open jaws within the same alliance etc.

2 years ago this was handy as Adl to CDG or LHR was $1950. But Adl to melb. Melb to Sin. Sin to lhr then CDG back to ADL was $995 (with virgin /Etihad).

  • I'm happy to pay you $500 for 50000 of your Amex Ascent points. Could go some way to paying for your ticket??

    Pm me.

    • I've got MR points not ascent. Keen to hang on to them at this stage.
