I was watching this for last couple of months and found lower than normal price. It has good reviews on amazon. A quick google search says the local price is AUD $1399.00. Now need to find good fixed screen as amazon dont ship screens in Australia.

  • It's this good for a home theatre?

After reading reviews on Amazon it seems really good at this price.

I have the Optoma HD141X (predecessor model) and it's great for home cinema - feel free to ask me any questions, I'll do my best to respond. I have it creating a 3 meter wide screen (390cm diagonal) and it does a great job.

in regards to the "rainbow effect" mentioned below, some people make a big deal out of it. For me, I can see it if I dart my eyes from one side of the screen to the other looking for it, but don't notice it at all if I'm watching a movie - so not a problem at all to my eyes.

Note that this is a not a short throw distance projector, so you need a longer room for large screen. You can check the distance calculation here: https://www.optomausa.com/distancecalc.aspx.
That said, my projector sits almost directly below my projector which for me is about the perfect viewing distance - I wouldn't want to be any closer.

      BTW:
the HD142X is slightly cheaper from Amazon Germany: €500.46 is about $698.89, and the HD141X can be had for €454.64 - about $635.

Edit: word of advice for anyone setting up a home cinema. If you're having trouble getting stuff connected, check your HDMI cables! I spent hours trying to figure out why my receiver wasn't talking properly / reliably to my projector. Turns out 2 of my 5 cables were bad!! Once cables were swapped out, everything works a treat.

      • Definitely do some research on cables, best place I found is cablechick, every cable I've bought from them has lived up to the specs.

I'm now having fun with 4k60 + HDR… HDMI hates it, I think!

      • Do you watch 3D ? If yes where did you buy the glasses from?

        • Nah I don't watch 3D… I think it ruins more films than it improves.

          @braddsey:

Love my 3D movies. For me, it greatly enhances watching a movie. IMO even a shite movie is greatly improved when in 3D.

        • @pacificstorm: each to their own!

        • @pacificstorm: Damn you guys! you've got me tempted to try 3D again now I've got a home cinema screen. I have a trip to the USA in a few months, maybe buy 3D kit there…

        • @braddsey:

Hehe.. Watched the Ninja Turtles - Out Of The Shadows the other week. Not much of a movie I reckon but man, I really dug the 3D effects on it. :)

  • I've had an Optoma Short Throw Projector for about 4 years and it hasn't skipped a beat.

I'd never heard of Optoma beforehand as my work went through a procession of BenQ, Sony and Samsung projectors. But now I can vouch for them.

Just be aware of the 'rainbow effect' if your eyes are particularly sensitive to it, a few people mentioned it in the Amazon reviews.

    • Never a big issue as others make it out to be
Rainbow effects maybe 2/10 people severely

Plenty of good 3lcd projectors on the market to sort that out though

    • What is the rainbow effect? On my plasma if I look to another part of the screen I see colour shifts around objects being displayed. Is that the same thing?

      • +1

        http://hometheaterreview.com/rainbow-effect/

If you can see it on plasmas, you'll definitely be able to see it with a DLP projector. It's more noticeable with high differences in colour, (ie white on black).

        • This is anecdotal but even so I've noticed an 'adjustment period' for my eyes in regards to the rainbow effect.

I have a BenQ W2000 and the first time I used it the rainbow effect was very noticeable, annoyingly so, but mostly during white text on black background screens.

After about 10-20mins or so it's not so obvious. You kind of get used to it, but everytime i fired up the projector my eyes took a few minutes to get used to the effect in order to minimise.

        • Thanks mate! I thought I just had a special brain, happy to find out others do too!

  • I ordered one at $549, still not received . Tried to contact Amazon to do a price match. They suggested me to return the projector and order another one at lower price. I feel they don't care about profit at all.

I don't know what you'd expect them to do
Price drops are on the reseller not Amazon as they're really just a web front

Perhaps contact the seller you bought it off and explain the issue

If you've bought one and it's been shipped then I don't know how you want Amazon to resolve it for you if it's dropped in price since

      • +2

Amazon aren't just a web front - they sell almost everything themselves. They also sell on behalf of other sellers (amazon marketplace). That aside - the rest of your comment is valid!

      • What I want is like " price promise" you get from the Goodguys here.

        • Amazon's prices constantly fluctuate to match the competition - the price you pay is the price you get. They do free shipping and free returns in countries where they operate so if there's a massive price drop people can send stuff back and buy it again.

          Too bad for Australia…

          @braddsey:

Actually, return to Amazon is also easy here.
They will cover the returning postage.
As long as you keep the original package.

        • @H_J: Wow I didn't know that… but I don't need to, I live in Germany.

  • Really Really hope this has a 110V,60Hz/240V,50Hz power supply for anyone who has jumped on this!

  • didn't see until clicking order that the new price would be $800. good thing it's easy to click cancel order on amazon.
