hit and run, Cop dont care, said bad luck and he is too busy!

hello everyone, this is my first post on the forum and English is not my first language, so please forgive me for spelling and grammar errors

Stopped at red light, got hit from behind, the guy drove off in like 2-3sec,
i only manage to get the first 3 digi of his rego,
He is in late 30, i know the maker, color and model of the car,
However when i went to local police station to report this hit and run, the officer said he need full rego plate, as he dont have time to look up the rego for me
and he said he know the area, there is no camera on that red light, so bad luck, there is nothing he can do, i asked can i at least have a police incident report for insurance claim, he said no, unless I have full rego and he is too busy and tell me to go home.

So WTF, like he said, bad luck? Pay the access fee out of my own pocket, and this guy gets away with hit and run?
any suggestion on how to find out the full rego of that car?
PS. I am in VIC

Is it legal for me to post a sign at intersection (like these garage for sale sign) asking for witnesses to come forward and contact me for more information?

Why didn't you try another station?

    • i did, i tried two different police stations, both said if i dont have full rego, they cannot do anything about it

I think hit & run is an offence. Not sure why cops are not interested in filing a report.

No camera and no leads. like finding a needle in a haystack.
Maybe you need to go back to the scene of the crime to see if there are cameras on private property facing the road.

which is perfectly fine btxy, why should they "guess" the plate and incriminate someone who "may" of been the person who caused the incident
end of the day, you want to hope

        1. someone else saw it
        2. someone else filmed it, be it cctv or dash camera footage
        3. someone else reports it

Demand to make a report, and if he won't do it ask for his details so you can make a complaint, then ask for a supervisor.

Cops don't like to take reports because every unsolved crime gets recorded against them and makes them look bad. You might have enough information to find the guy, but it's probably not enough to charge him.

You might able to, if your charismatic enough, go to any houses or busineses that are along that street that have cameras and ask to check the footage.

    • i even saw the guy got tatoo on the arm

      • How slow was this guy going when he hit you?! I can barely notice skin color in a speeding car, let alone distinguishing marks like tattoos

edit: Ohhh, your in a car too. I thought you got ran over :/

You can make a police report, even if you only have 1 digit of the rego, but nothing can by done by the Police. You do need the full rego to be able to identify the driver/car. Your insurance would need rego/details of the other driver too, otherwise you'll be paying the excess.

    • yeah, but that officer told me, he is too busy, and told me bad luck and go home

Go to another station or talk to a different officer. Just say you need a Vehicle Collision Report Number for insurance.
To be honest, I dont think having a report number or not will make any difference to your insurance, since you dont have any details of the other driver, you'll still be paying the excess.

        • AAMI and other insurers underwritten by Suncorp only need rego, whereas insurers underwritten by AIG require rego, name and address to avoid paying excess

      • I think you can do is to put what you have experience on police Facebook page or another social media to draw more attention.

The cops attitude isn't great, but he's right in saying that there is nothing he can do. An incident report will gain you nothing and is a complete waste of yours and his time. You will still have to pay your insurance excess, you will still have insurance premium increases, etc.

Unless you are lucky enough to find some house/business that has CCTV footage of the impact (not just of the car, but the actual impact) then you are shit out of luck. It sucks but that's unfortunately how it is.

While it wont resolve your issue, id recommend you to spend money on Dashcam. Also, try AussieDashCams on FB. Possible someone else may have captured the crash.

2017 and no dashcam drivers are still out there

This is the EXACT reason for buying a quality dashcam

Even the blackvue DC650S dual camera would of paid for itself in one accident, not having to deal with an excess

Its crazy how people today drive around without some form of "backup insurance" for others stupidity

    • +1

Well I must be crazy then

      • +3

I as well, and the majority of drivers.

    • Dashcam might save you a bit of trouble but it not going to stop you from being in an accident.

  • how distinct was the car?
    3 digits 'might' be enough

    white commodore/camry/falcon = no hope
teal green Ferrari = some chance

  • Spend some money..get dash cam front and rear. One day someone may blame you for a fault that's not yours. Like the lady in front of me in a car who put her car in reverse and backed into me at an intersection.

Do you have comprehensive car insurance?

    Just make a claim.

  • Was it an old style vic plate like ABC123 and did you get the first 3 letters?

If so, can try the vicroads rego check tool and go from 000 to 999 hoping to get a match. Only work if there is only 1 vehicle of the type within that range.

    A

    • yes it is old style vic plate like ABC123

and i tried that method today, from 000-999, i only found 1 matchs the maker, model and colour of the car in question
but the police officer is still refuse to make an offical report as i have not visible injuries

this is really bizarre..i find it hard to believe. try another police station in the next suburb until some hardworking/responsible police officer helps you

  • it it hard to find hardworking/responsible police officer unless you are driveing and using your phone, they will chase you down!
