Xiaomi Phone Options

Hi , i am looking for a new android phone because my Ip5s is almost dead and too slow for daily using. I am very interested into 2 products : Xiaomi Mi Max ( 3g/32G) and Mi5 ( 3g/64G) , but having some questions :

1/ Mi max $AU260 and Mi5$AU310 ( Aliexpress ) i am small Asian guy but i dont mind about 6.4 inch smart phone. I dont watch movie or play games on phone , just use camera for work purpose ( Camera on Ip5s is enough for me). I only need battery and performance for Facebook and web browser . Which one should i choose to use for next 1-2.5 year ?

2/ I have seen many Redmi products and Notes but i feels Mi max performance still above them , is it right ?

3/ Many people said to wait for new Mi6 ( maybe next month) and the price of Mi5 , Mimax will decline. Is this worth to wait for it ? My budget ~ AU250-320. What would be the lowest price of Mi5 and Mimax after releasing MI6 ?

THANKS FOR READINNNGGG. ( english is not my mother language so sorry ).

I was just reading up about them last night. I compared the above phones you mentioned. I found the Mi5 doesn't have expandable memory which is a deal breaker for me as it's now my default still/video camera. The Max appears to have lower specs then the Mi5 but can take expandable memory.

I currently use a Sony Xperia which has a better then average camera. The Xiaomi phones aren't up to the specs of the Sony.

I also found a few articles that the Chinese 4G network may not be fully compatible with the Aus 4G network. This is because China uses different channels in the 4G band compared to Aus. I haven't checked Telstra to see if this is correct though.

Another review said the phones are very cheaply made.

For the price they appear to be very good value for money but you just need to understand a few shortcuts had to be taken.

  • If you want full Australian network compatibility then Xiaomi Note 3 Pro Special Global version (Kate) is the way to go. Priced around $213 + DHL postage $17 it is not too bad. Spec is same as Mi Max. Mi Max has Snapdragon 650 with 3GB memory which is what the Note 3 Pro has. Note 3 Pro has 5.5 inch screen.

This model has a 2.5mm height difference from the other Note 3 models, you will have a VERY hard time finding a case that fits and more importantly a replacement LCD if you break it.

I have the Mi Note 2 - it's junk. MIUI is a terrible, terrible OS that will leave you shaking your head at some design decisions. For example, you can't "peek" notifications with one hand (you'll need fingers to pull them down) and their battery management stuff is aggressively dodgy and disorganized that you should expect to (profanity) around with several settings in several apps in order to make things like push notifications work.

Other things (like the volume rocker and power button) are where they skip out on - the buttons go soft like a $100 Chinese phone would.

I recommend you put your money towards a more usable phone from a better company.

I've got a Mi Max (3/32gb) and love it. Build quality is good. The camera isn't fantastic in low light. Battery time is great. I paid $240 and it was delivered from Hong Kong in under a week to NSW country area. Just make sure to get the global ROM version or you'll have to manually install google play.

    • Did you order from Aliexpress ? Is this unconvenient for you in daily basis ?

      • Bought it on ebay with a 10% off code 'cause wanted to use paypal . It's my main phone and i use it in the car a lot for GPS/ODB/Music player

  • If you only need "battery and performance for Facebook and Web Browser" then pretty much any new Xiaomi phone would be adequate. You wouldn't need the Mi5 or the Mi6, because they are overkill for what you need. Xiaomi prices aren't as sensitive as other phone brands.

    • He also needs camera good as ip5. Not sure how good up 5 camera is

  • I have redmi note 3 pro special edition.(Kate). It is fast and battery life is excellent.
The camera is ok but may not good enough if you need very good camera. You find alot of good reviews for the camera.

The other phone to think about is the moto G4 plus. Seems to be very good value for money and available locally. It is $300 for 16gb version and 370 for 32gb version.

    • Display is quite underwhelming too.

      • In what way. I quite like to display

  • Anyway , i decided to go with Mi max $240 after discount from Aliexpress. Hopefully i can get item after 2 weeks delivery.
